Please help, I am due to take my bitch to her stud in about 2 1/2 weeks and she seems to have developed a cough, which after researching on the web, could be kennel cough! what do i do now! Can i still mate her?

I'm sure the stud dog owner would not thank you! Kennel Cough is highly contagious and stays that way for quite some time after the dog appears to have thrown it off. Unfortunately your dog would appear to have contracted it at the worst possible time for you!

hi
i am assuming it is kennel cough, she is trying to clear her throat and then retching without bringing anything up. I am taking her to the vets 2moro morning to check. I am sooooooo fed up, we have planned her mating meticulously and i would be upset for something to have messed it up!

Out of interest - would KC virus affect the pups of an infected dog ?

Like John mentions I would be very annoyed if I was the owner of the stud dog and she did indeed have KC

I don't know the answer Lel but I would doubt it. I don't think the foetus would get to be advanced enough for it to be affected before the Kennel Cough cleared the system. But I stress, that is only my guess, I really don't know.

Best wishes, John

I had a bitch a few years back who contracted kennel cough a couple of weeks in to her pregnancy she was treated with synuloux antibiotics and went on to have a litter of 6 healthy puppies, I was worried although my vet assured me they would be fine and luckily he was right.

...but Briedog lost most of her litter with KC - we were all very upset.
Just thought - wretching without producing anything is a preliminary symptom of bloat - hope it isn't in your case.

I was  lucky I know, we caught it very early and the bitch was well clear when her puppies arrived or it could have been a very different story funily enough her son and daughter have been in contact with dogs with KC a couple of times since and never caught it perhaps they became immune because their mother had it? Saying that I would never mate a bitch  I knew to have KC.

I would be very reluctant to mate a bitch that was not at the peak of health, and I certainly would not allow a bitch with kennel cough to come to my male to be mated.

It is generally said with KC that you should not allow your dog to exercise at full pelt for at least 6 weeks after recovery in case of complications.

My advise would be to wait and get her in the peak of health again before you mate her.

Hi there help,

The transmission of kennel cough is usually transmitted from dog to dog where a number of animals are gathered under one roof, or at a dog show or in boarding kennels, it is possible for the singly owned pet dog to suffer from kennel cough too. Dogs become infected by breathing in infected airborne particles. The infected agents are carried in the air in a manner similar to the way human cold or influenza is spread.
Although if your still mated your bitch I don't believe it would affect the pups later on but common sense and courtesy dictate you DO NOT go ahead.  Your actions in the mean time should be getting her to the vets for antibiotics and isolating her from other dogs.  All the best and I hope you manage later on.

Hi all
took her to the vet today and she gave her an antibotic jab, and anti inflamitory jab and put her on a course of anitbiotics for 7 days at 3 a day. Got to take her back next week for a check up. She had been 110% better since the jabs, and has only coughed 4 times since this morning!
Lets hope she is on the mend.
