I have a 12 week old puppy which i need to rehome due to my sons allergy. I rang a puppy rescue advertised in the free adds and was told by the lady who answered the phone that they had space and could pick my puppy up that afternoon. all seemed fine until i started to ask the lady some questions, could I come and see the rescue centre, would the home be vetted etc, the lady said they vet homes but I couldnt bring the puppy to her as they are not open to the public. I could hear puppies yapping in the background, sounded like there were a lot of them. I said id think about it and put phone down.

I am now suspicuious as just out of curiositie i got my friend to ring up and ask what kind of puppies they had, lady told my friend they had an assortment of crossbtreeds priced £80-100 and some purebred pups various breeds, thatcame from the purebred rescue wherever that is. she said centre not open to the public, they bring the puppy to you as they have to vett your home. purebred puppies cost more, depending what breed. Does this sound normal? I was sure rescues let you bring the animal in and check the centre for yourself, also the prices seem very high, what should I do as I am concerned it may be a puppy farm? i dont think i will be able to do very much as it was a mobile number so the centre could be anywhere!

£80-£100 is about right for a rescue dog, remember they have to feed and vaccinate and most rescue places castrate/spay the dogs before rehomeing

the guest said it was a puppy rehoming centre so how could they spay/castrate puppies? they would need to be at least 6 months to have that done?

I'd be suspicious if I couldn't visit the premises even as a 'guest'. Willthe breeder not take your puppy back?

Hi Guest, I'd look elsewhere.

*Lots* of puppies yapping instead of dogs barking / howling.

Not open to the public - NEVER - not even to drop a pup off?

Most of all "some purebred pups various breeds, that came from the purebred rescue". Strange breed rescue societies methinks!

Have you asked the breeder to take the pup back, that would be the place to start. Also are you sure it is the pup your son is allergic to.

I agree, why not have a scratch test to see if the dog is the problem, or try asking Battersea dh for some advice they are really lovely and will offer you help if you need it and may have name of reputable home near to you. Be wary as a "rescue" centre near us is very dodgy! You wouldn't want to worry about where pup has gone. Maybe even put an ad in your local paper and then you can vet prospective homes yourself! Why not put a description and your area on champ dogs there are lots of doggy lovers that read this site who knows one may offer a home!
Good luck

normaly its £60 for a cross breed and £100 for a pure bred . you have to rember that they need money to run the rescue , not to mention pay for vet treatments , vax's and neutering dogs , sometimes they have to pay for transport . and to feed all the animals , your dog may be vax .. healthy and fit but others that come into the rescues arent so they need as much money as they can get , often dogs come into the rescues with mange things that need to be seen by the vet regular.

I will say there are some people who are advertising to rehome pups that arent actual rescues you have to be very careful who your placing him with

im happy your sending your pup of to a rescue rather then a pound as all pound dogs get pts within 5 days even less if you sign them over.
Try dogpages.org.uk  the rescue people will help you rehome your pup :) that way you will have peace of mind hes in a home :) If you pm me with some details of your pup then i may be able to help find a loving forever home for him .

For gods sake, this is a 12 week old puppy we are talking about.

If I had to get rid of it my first call would be to the breeder, and if this failed I would make damm sure I personally found it a good home which I had vetted personally..

A dog is for life and all that..

1 Contact the breeder who, if reputable, would definitely want it back, if not
2 Contact breed rescue who will have vetted homes suitable for the breed, if not (highly unlikely)
3 Contact an established rescue such as Blue Cross, NCDL, RSPCA etc

There are many "rescue" centres that are run on extremely dubious lines by somewhat dubious people; there is no reason to use these in your particular circumstances.

I think you are right to be wary, well done for that :) Do try to rehome the pup either back with the breeder or with a reputable rescue :)

What breed is the pup, it might help if you say as there are some rescues that deal with specific breeds and we might be able to recommend some rescue centres. As said by the others try the breeder first, but if I was looking to rehome any dog i would want to have a good luck round first and be able to ask lots of questions.

I agree whne we got our Bolognese in the pack we got was a number of a Bolognese rescue and it was very careful to point out that should there be ANY problems not to panic but to give them a call. Although of course my first call would have to be to the breeder!
