Hi all,

Murfee is coming up to 18 months now and weighs about 45 kilos, He has always had a problem with the lead and doesn't particularly enjoy lead walking, not because he has been traumatised in any way, my theory is, because he's having his freedom taken away from him and he can't jump and leap about and act like a general thug :D  like he does when he is off it. But it is getting progressively worse and this morning he dragged me over for the first time and, understandably I don't want this to happen again! He has a 70%leather 30%chain handmade collar, the reason I got it made was because of his 12 inch long thick coat, it's the only collar that doesn't matt the hair or cause discomfort. I have done a seach on here for "lead pulling" and have read the posts with interest, but because he is very stubborn and pigheaded (can be a breed trait) I need something that will give me some control. Bear in mind, he uses all of his weight and force and I sometimes feel that I have a ten ton truck on the end of the lead. I have NEVER yanked his lead as this causes more probs than it solves IMO,being used to GSDs for many years it is a bit of a culture shock and I have re-educated myself on my training techniques :-) We don't normally have a communication problem but this is one that is an uphill struggle. Big question is, would a head collar or harness be suitable for him? We did have a light weight harness for him when he was 6 months old but he destroyed it by putting too much strain on it and snapped. Incidentally, whenever we go out and he starts his usual antics, I make him sit and wait, he happy to do this for as long as I want, until we go to walk off and then it starts all over again, so what should be a 15 minute walk turns into a 60 minute outing as we seem to spend most of our time sitting looking at one another, if it carries on, I fear he will develop piles sitting on a cold wet pavement for so long :D Advice please

I would always recommend a headcollar where either your or the dog's welfare could be in jeopardy.  Don't know why it would not be suitable.
