Topic Dog Boards / General / German Shepherd ears no sign of going up

my pup is 16 weeks old today his ears are still both still down

We have had him since 12 1/2 weeks and during that time his ears have never show any signs of  movement or starting to go up

I know that during teething,  they can go up and down and that one can go up  and one  be down or point inwards etc  But my worry is they are not doing that They are completly floppy

I have read about starting to worry if there is no sign of anything by 4 months and to start thinking of taping the ears if they do not go up by 5/6 months

I would welcome some advice from GSD owners/ breeders

16 weeks is still young.
My GSD ears did not fully come up until she was about 7 months, the did pop up at 6 ths but went down again.
At 11mths of age the are both up.

I really wouldnt start worrying yet. My GSD's dad's ears were up and down until he was 18 months old. We thought theyd never go up, there was always one up and one down, often a different one!! Once they did go up they were fantastic.

However, my GSD girl (his daughter) her ears were fully up at 4 weeks!!!  We used to call her the demented bat!! They went up and stayed up and have never been down again (unless she's in trouble when she flaps them...he he )

Hi I REALLY would not even be thinking of taping the pups ears you can do more harm than good and the ears can be left in an un natural position if done wrong, my babys ears are just up now and hes nearly 6 months however there was a lot of movement before this, shepherds ears are all over the place and I certainly would not be worrying just yet as long as the bases are ok the rest should follow

As another GSD owner I'd say don't worry too.  Our dogs ears have always gone up and down until they were 8/9 months old and nothing to worry about.  One thing that we always do (and I don't know if it makes any difference to be honest) is to lay on the floor during the evening with the pup once they are sleepy and massage their ears to get the blood supply going.  Nothing rough but using a kind of T-Touch technique.

It's a great way of bonding with pup and also gets them used to being handled.
