On our weekly shop to Morrisons we were looking for something a bit different to give to our bitch to eat (JWB is the norm for her) and in the 'fresh meat' section we were about to get her some kidney when we stumbled across some Pigs heart and Lambs heart. After cutting it up and putting it in the oven for about an hour on Gas Mark 3-4 we put it into Lacey's bowl with some chum bitesize mix. About 20 seconds later (and I do mean 20 seconds) it was all gone apart from the chum bite! At about 65-70p for a carton we think it could be Lacey's treat once every now and then as she spent the rest of the afternoon running around and playing even more than usual. Has anyone else feed their dogs heart or any other bits of offal and seen any changes in them?
Yep, my lot have them regularly, only raw!!!! :D Heart is classed as muscle meat, offal ie: liver, kidney is not recommended to be fed to often more like once a wk/10dys. You might like to a search on google for feeding these things to dogs :)

We usually give our bitch the following menu for a week chicken on a mon, tuna on a tues, sardines on a weds, mince on thurs, small amount of corned beef on fri and each day the food is mixed in with her James Well Beloved. She has only ever had liver once before and that was in a liver cake we made for her and the smell was enough to put me off doing that again for a while!!!!! She gets very windy and her poo gets very runny after eating Pedigree or any other tinned dog food so we only give it to her as a very last resort. She is fit enough and happy enough on her JWB and as me and the OH hate the smell of liver and kidney the chances of her getting it once a year is rare!!!! Local supermarket has just started selling Turkey legs on the bone but as turkey bones are quite soft i don't think we'll try her on them.
If you feed the liver raw (in small quantities) it doesn't smell. It only starts to smell when you cook it.

take the rough with the smooth
I buy a lot of meat from Morrisons for my dogs but I don't cook any of it. They absolutely love raw heart and it is a favourite breakfast for them. My pup, now six weeks old, has been eating tiny slivers of it since she was just over 4 weeks old. I also buy liver and kidney for them which is also fed raw.

I get my liver, heart and chicken wings from Morrisons too, all fed raw. I did have a go at cooking liver in the oven for treats but forgot it and it burnt to a crisp! :(

My dog regularly eats lungs, liver, kidneys, hearts, however all raw. She also eats raw turkey legs, demolishes 750gm of raw turkey in 2 mins flat. Corned beef is extremely salty so take care.

Please tell me why my older dog refuses to eat raw liver and kidneys (haven't tried hearts yet) and will just pick up a piece and then roll on it :D He used to roll on raw chicken several years ago before he got the hang of eating it :) I have to slightly cook the liver and kidney in the microwave before he will reluctantly eat it. I am hoping that he will eventually eat it raw. My younger dog eats it without problem.
Any suggestions or do I just have a daft dog :D

Hi,
I feed Murfee on raw tripe and he has lots of RMB in his diet, for a treat, last week,I also decided to buy some lambs hearts as a treat for him. I gave them to him raw, as I try to with all meat and he wolfed it down. BIG MISTAKE! The next morning, to say we had a diarrhoea problem would be an understatement
 I dont understand it, as he has a very strong stomach, we always call him "iron guts" and he is used to raw meat. Yet I gave my shepherd,Ella, the same and she didnt suffer, so it couldnt have been a problem with the hearts. Wonder why it affected him like that? Needless to say, I am wary of giving them again :-( Has anybody else had the same problem?

Has he eaten lamb before; some dogs don't take to some protein sources; also hearts are very rich and, IMHO like liver and kidneys, should be given in smaller quantities say 50% of normal intake.
I have not experienced problems myself.

Hi Tohme,
Yes, he has eaten lots of lamb before without a problem, perhaps the problem is, that I gave him too much.
Trouble is, I dont know how much to give him

he is a Briard and weighs about 45 kilos. I gave him 2 average sized hearts, perhaps I should try him again on hearts and other offal, only this time feed less. I tend to feed him lots of times a day as he is quite large(motto being little but often) and always hungry, albeit he is the right weight and I can easily feel his ribs.

I think I would reduce it to one heart and make sure that you feed a fairly simple menu otherwise that day eg no veggies and maybe just RMBs at other meals.
