hiya, i was just walking through the rugby in henley, and met the most sweetest spaniel dog.
it was chocolate coloured, bigger than a cocker smaller than a springer.
Any ideas what kind of spaniel it was?

Field or Sussex would have thought the Sussex is more like the Cocker in head and the Field more like the Springer, not confident others would agree with me.

I thought that the Field Spaniel was basically a liver or liver-roan Cocker? Could be wrong though!

JG you could well be right, all the fields I have know have a flat skull (no dome) and, too me at least a foreface more like the Springer longer and less broad than the Cocker, but that could just be my conception, good job I don't judge them I recon ;)

I always think a Sussex is more like a lighter-built Clumber in shape.

Yes would agree with that, guess it depends to some extent what dogs you have seen when you have your brain in receptive mode. That impression can shape your future thoughts on the breed and it's accuracy would depend on how good the specimens you saw were.

Could also have been a crossbreed :)

Could of been a clipped Spanish, we've had many people ask what was the Springer crossed with to get our dogs!!

I think you would find the the Field and Cockers were different sizes of the same dog. If it was too big for one it became the other! It was only later that they were split into seperate breeds.

I dont know the answer to that Jackie. An old friend of mine many years who was a breeder of Fields told me and it was one of those little bits of useless info that got stuck in my addled brain ;)
Best wishes, John

In the late 19th, Cocker Spaniel puppies were indeed registered as either Field Spaniels or Cockers depending on whether they were over or under 25 lbs - this meant you could have 2 breeds in the same litter & as one writer said, a dog could wake up a Cocker but if he had a hearty breakfast, he could be a Field Spaniel by lunchtime (or words to that effect :-)) This practice ceased in 1892 apparently so a fair bit of water has passed under the bridge since then ;-)

im not sure if youre right john, the field and cocker spaniel have very different temperments :D

The split happened many years ago, or so I'm led to believe so any differences in temperment COULD be down to the restricted gene pool.

It could have been a working cocker.
