hi , there are so many foods on the market now , im confused at what to feed my westie pup, she is 4 months now.... i know all foods dont agree with all dogs, and the prices vary alot too, just wondered on others views ?? if a food gives a pup runs is that because it doesnt suit them, or because they arent used to it yet ??

The best food for your dog is the one it will eat and does well on. It is also a good idea if you are able to get it, afford it and able to deal with it. (I can't handle tripe) Having said that people will all tell you their favourite food and what they think is best, but it will be up to you to make the final choice.
Your pup or any dog will get the runs if you do not change the food over slowly enough, take about 3 week to do it. What do you feed now, and do you have a reason to want to change it?

hi jackie, the breeders fed her vitalin original, they said i should keep her on it, but she doesnt seem very interested in it, when i had a dog b4 , when u fed her she loved her food and licked the bowl clean, i dont want her getting under weight , that was why i thought to change it, how do u change it over a few weeks ??

Don't know that food at all but what I do when I change foods is to start to add a little bit of the new food to the one the dog is used to, then gradualy add a little more of the new and a little less of the old until you have changed to the new food. I take about 3 weeks to do it with a puppy and about 10 days with adults. What did your other dog have that he liked so much and was he the same breed.

Would suggest that you try adding a little something tasty to her present food to see it that helps - trouble with changing food you may have to do it several times to find something that is liked and it could be just a stage the pup is going through. Could try going to your local pet food shop and asking for some samples of puppy food them offer them as treats to see if any take the pups fancy.

Your welcome, they will have loads of dry complete samples but if none of those suit you could think of tinned complete or Nature diet.
The trouble is with samples you find the dog will eat the sample but when you buy a 15kg bag they turn their nose up at it. I am sure we have all made the same mistakes with our dogs and feeding, we think the poor little thing dosnt like whatever it is we are feeding, Well how come it has got to the stage it is at when we bring home our nice fat little puppy? of course the dog isnt eating, it is in a strange place having moved away from the breeder and litter mates into your home, and if it dosnt eat you will provide it with something different to tempt it to eat. and having tried that for a day or so it dosnt like that any more so you try and tempt it with something else. this is how we get fussy eaters, and small dogs are renowned for it. A dog will eat when it is hungry, if it dosnt eat what you have put down for it in half and hour then remove it and put it down again a couple of hours later, When it is hungry it will eat it.......Pat
