Topic Dog Boards / Health / He's had his Op (re-is it his cruciate?)
- By jancx [eu] Date 17.03.04 13:21 UTC
Leo had his op late yesterday afternoon, and all went well. I rang the hospital this morning and he had a good night and is "bright and perky" today, he can come home later this afternoon. The surgeon said that 95% of dogs make a full recovery, although obviously it takes time (about 6mths), so I'm feeling very positive.
I can't wait to see his little face, he looked so astounded yesterday when I walked off down the corridor without him, almost as if he was saying - Muumm haven't you forgotten something?

All I need now are some good tips for keeping a very boisterous 8st Bullmastiff pup quiet for weeks on end, lol.

Hiya, glad heis okay, you will need a big crate to put him in that is the only way to keep them still
lots of luck.

Hi Jan,
Glad things have gone ok, as for keeping him quiet, cage rest is the best thing to do, at least you will know he is safe and can't jump around.

Thanks
We had a bad night last night, had to sleep on the floor downstairs with him. He's not a dog that ever cries or whines, but he was making the most heartrendering groans that seemed to come from deep within him. The hospital gave us Metacam but after all the postings on here about that and Rimadyl I was loathe to give it him any more. It didn't work anyway when I did give him an extra half dose.

He's quiet now, but won't eat anything and has terrible diarrhea, I'm sure the next few days will see a vast improvement though.

See if he will eat some bio yogurt, it will help line his stomach.  They usually like it, especially if licked out of the pot.

Hope he feels better later

Hi when my dog had his second op he was very dozy when he came home. I ended up sleeeping down stairs with him for a week lucky for me we had a sofa bed down stairs.
My dog also had very bad diarrohea the next day i rang the vet and they said they had given him morfene (sorry cant spell it) and it can cause diarrohea
Hope your boy is feeling better soon.

Hi Jan,
Sorry to hear you had a bad night or rather Leo did, poor thing, as the other psoter said the natural bio yogurt is really good for upset tummies,(i use the Yeo Valley one) i find they love licking it of a spoon (very messy),  i also give to to mine once a week mixed into their food as a treat.
I'm sure he will be ok in a few days time, he's probably very sore and feeling very sorry for himself, lots of TLC needed.

They do make a full recovery mine did hers in in november and is  back running around like a lunatic (and thats brilliant considering she only has one back leg and it was that one she did the cruciate on!!! and that is is over 11 years old).  Swimming is extremely helpful in their recovery.  I think it is 6 weeks after the op that you start it, but it is amazing how much it helps.  I dislike giving metacam too, but on weighing up all the pros and cons decided that we should, and touch wood no problems here.  But the cage rest keeping quiet is hard but it is very necessary.
