I am very angry with myself - and feel that I should write this as it shows that those of us who have had dogs for years still slip up.
We have an old fridge outside in the garage and at the weekend bought it into the kitchen whilst the garage was being rendered. Whilst I was out of the room for about 15 minutes - my 7 month old lab chewed through the cable. If we didn't have circuit breakers on our whole electicity circuit she would be DEAD now, and possibly if her mother had gone to touch her she also would have been electrocuted.
I am horrified that I was so careless, please learn by my mistake - we need to be so careful with puppies and young dogs around.

Tyler did something similar a few months a go where he was under my bed and then suddenly came running out (well, sliding out really) backwards looking really worried. As he had never chewed cables before I didn't take much notice, just told him to stop being silly. Then he did it again (Tyler doesn't learn from his mistakes :() so I had a look at what he was doing and saw that he had chewed the cable for my bed side lamp down to the wires. It was only a little bit exposed, but enough for him to get a little electric shock.

The thing that got me though was the fact that he did it twice!

My Jasper did this three times when he was a puppy and Buddy has done it once. Fortunately Buddy was caught in time before he got to bare the cables. Jasper on the other hand bit straight through two that were live and on at the time, one was my computer monitor and I was working on it. I thought he was asleep on my feet - but no that was his bottom!!. First I knew was when the picture went funny and then blank. We had no idea - it was so very very quck. We have a tripboard but it never tripped and Jasper was not electrocuted either. Don't ask me how because by rights either the trip should have gone or he should be dead. i can only assume hios teeth were long enough and dry enough not to create a circuit.I am just so glad he was OK.

It is something you always have to watch for but it's the same as with kids - you can only do so much - you do your best but they still catch you out. Fortunately Lorna your girls are OK. Don't blame yourself - but as you already say - hope others learn or are reminded of this danger.
