As a first time breeder, where should I start to search for a stud dog ?
I have a 3 year old miniature poodle with a lovely temperament and a list of people who would buy a pup if she had a litter.

Firstly is she lovely in your eyes or is she a good example of a poodle.
Secondly forget all those buyers they fade to grey when the pups arrive.
If you want to breed for the right reasons your best attending shows,
talk to as many breeders as possible
Good luck.

ask the folk who really want a pup from her to pay a reasonable deposit to secure themselves a pup, you'll soon find out if theyre really interested or not,

As a first time breeder, I would suggest you look for some good advice and perhaps a a good guide to what to expect. I would recommend a book called The Book of the Bitch by Jim Evans MRCVS and Kay White.
Having read that, contact the breeder of your bitch and ask them for their advice and help. They should know the lines they have bred, and will therefore help you find the right stud dog. If they are a show orientated household they will probably assess your bitch and choose a stud dog who will compliment your bitch line, as to show points.
You will need to test your bitch for eye conditions under the British Veterinary Association Kennel Club scheme, and ensure any stud dog you consider is also tested. Ask the stud dog owner for a copy of the certificate to show your puppy buyers.
If your breeder is not helpful then you should go to the Kennel Club and ask for help to contact some poodle clubs, join one or two and learn more about the breed. Attend Crufts and the poodle club shows, this will bring you into contact with breeders who will be able to give you indepth advice about the breed as whole and help you with your plans.
Good luck, let us know how you get on?

Please email me and I'll send you an article on 'To Breed or Not To Breed -- That is the question' as well as some genetic disorders that you should ensure both your dog and any dog that you use as stud is free of before breeding. Just click on my name to get the email address.
