We have just become new owners of a small 15 month old tri colour cocker bitch who has not grown enough to continue in the show ring. The breeder would not transfer her pedigree papers to me because she did not want us to breed from her. We have no intentions of breeding from her because she is so tiny. Is this the normal way of preventing a purchaser from breeding?

ive just done excactly that,-i had a bitch that was winning well, fabulous bitch but very small,i hung on hoping she would make more size and she didnt, because she was so correct with a lot of breed type ,also her dam taking bob at crufts, her grandfather was top sire for many years, her grandmother top brood bitch, her uncle was top sire for a while then her grandfather took it again, i was torn ,in one way i thought it a crime not to take at least one litter from her. the other way of thinking was what if anything happened to her because of her size, another factor was her dam was not a good whelper. needing a ceasar ,then sadly having to be pts a day short of her 4th birthday because of cancer,i eventually decided to let her go to a pet home ,when the right one came along, i was asked to sell her many times, but refused, then i met the people who i knew she'd be happy with and could see how thrilled they where with her, so she's now living like the queen, she's to be speyed this month and no they didn't get the papers for her,-i cant see where you've got a problem, if you aren't going to breed from her you dont need her papers, the breeder is just making sure that she's done the best for her bitch, if she thought she was big enough to breed from she would of done so herself, however i hope the price reflects this, as i only charged for the spey and was pleased to let her go to such a loving home,

Thanks for that, I have no problem with the lack of papers but just wondered if this was the norm.

Another way would have been to apply to have the registration endorsed, which can be done while the dog is still in the breeders possession. This fact has to be drawn to the purchasers attention, and then they could have the papers. the posession or lack thereof of clear or endorsed papers won't prevent actual breeding, just make pups non KC registerable. Only spaying would ensure that she isn't bred from! Just suppose it was easier for the breeder to keep the papers rather than have to apply to KC to put the endorsement on. I endorse all mine, and have to remember to lift it when I register puppies from the one I kept! I sent of the puppies registration application, only to realise I had never taken the endorsement off! so a quick phonecall, and a note to registration department was needed.

Yes it's fairly normal in Cocker circles ,Sue, though I assume you mean the KC registration papers have been retained - I don't see any reason why you wouldn't have been given a copy of your bitch's pedigree. Endorsements are not widely used in Cockers as they are in some breeds - I use them myself but not that many other breeders do.
How's your new arrival getting on with your other Cocker (I think you are Sue with the blue roan Cocker aren't you?)

Hi Jane
Yes I am the same Sue. Misty, the blue roan is top dog at the moment.Intially Misty ignored Ginty much to my surprise because she normally is over joyed with other dog company but of course they have not moved in There is the occasional scurrying around with Misty who has just come on heat trying to mount Ginty ( we want to change the name any suggestions?). Ginty had been kennelled outside so has a lot of new things to learn about. Unfortunately she was not vaccinated so she can't come for walks with Misty at the moment although we may take her along the beach at the weekend. Ginty has soon learnt that Misty is very ball orientated and by pinching the ball she will get Misty's full attention . Misty seems very sedate and mature but that may be because she is on heat and not feeling A1.

Hi Sue
Glad things are going ok - it can take a little while for an existing dog to accept a new arrival but it sounds like Misty & Ginty will be fine. Can see why you want to change the name - Ginty sounds a bit too similar to Misty doesn't it? I would just add any name you fancy to the end of "Ginty" & then after a while, drop the Ginty bit. I'm hopeless at deciding on names I'm afraid - how about Molly, Megan, Gemma, Amy, Daisy, Nina, Ellie, Hannah, Jasmine, Rosie?? Just a few to get you started :-)
