Hi, i have a 11 week puppy, who i am trying to toilet train at the moment. I think i am doing all the right things with her, but want advise as to anything more i should be doing.
I am letting her out as soon as i get up, and last thing before going to bed, and about every hour in between. When she 'goes' outside she is getting lots of fuss and treats, i am also getting up half way through the night to let her out.
But she is still weeing and pooing in her cage at night, and also during the afternoons when i am at work, last week though she was perfect, was holding herself for when i got up at 4.00 in the mornings, and again until i got up at 7.30, and also was fine for the hours i was at work, she seems to be going backwards instead of forwards. Has anyone got any advice as to anything else i can do?
Thanks Karen

I'd say it's just a minor setback that's all, you are doing everything right and it just takes time, some dogs click with it instantly others take longer. Don't worry it will happen eventually and the incidents will be less frequent until none at all !! :)

Hi,
I agree with you mygirl, they always have set backs, just like children, my boy was 8 months old until he was fully clean but you are doing all the right things, try not to worry :-)

Thanks for replying, i guess i just have to be patient with her, and keep doing what i am doing, she will learn eventually. I think we were lucky with the last puppy we had, she seemed to pick it up really fast, although Dally is 3 now, so maybe i have just blocked it all out.
Any way thanks for your replies

Hi there
I have found that our choc lab pup milo has never toileted in his crate. I have put this down to good advice that I found on this site... Only make the crate big enough so your pup can lie down fully (ie divide your crate will a box or a piece of wire mesh tied onto the sides). Increase the size of their area as the up grows. Any bigger and they will toilet at one end and sleep at the other. They instinctively won't toilet in their "den". We have just taken his crate away at 8 months and up till this moment he never soiled it. As for setting your alarm at 4am - I think your crazy!!! Hee Hee.. If your pup needs to go to the toilet, he will let you know! And if the crate is the right size he won't do it in there.

At 11 weeks the bowel will be coming under the conscious control of the pup but the bladder will take a few more weeks, at that age if you have to go then you have to, they have no way of holding on.
i toilet trained using puppy pads and never again! although she always did her business on them now that i have taken them away she always wees on the rug even though theres tiles, i have even tried covering the rug with all her toys so theres no space so if she most go it would be on the tiles but she finds even the tiniest space between the toys to go, and i sure its because the puppy pads have a soft cotton surface so she thinks she has to go on something with a similar feel, ie the rug so it looks like we will have to lose the rug now!

Thanks everyone for your responses, she is learning slowly. This weekend she has started going to the door when she wants to go out - i am so proud.
I suppose i could try partitioning off her cage, would not mind at night, but when i go to work during the day i like her to be able to move about if she wants to.
