I'm just trying to do some research on the parents of the puppy I'm looking to buy. I've found enough about the sire by just typing his name into Google (he's a champion and from a well-known line) but I'm struggling to find much about the dam. I've found bits and pieces on club sites, but I can't find her history - or even who her parents are - anywhere. I appreciate that I could just ask the breeder, but I figured if I could get the basics without bothering her, that'd be great...

Is there likely to be a record of this information somewhere? I know her "original" affix, plus the affix of her new owners kennel, and her name. I just want to speak to the owners of her parents and grand-parents, if possible, to get the lowdown on their dogs.

Anyone got any ideas who I can get in contact with? (Excuse me if I screwed up any of the above terminology, but I'm still trying to get the hang of all this dog speak!)

Ask the dams owner for the bitch's pedigree.

Hi Matt, I have found the details at:

http://www.online-pedigrees.com/  (sorry cant do links)

very useful, but usually only about well know, succesful dogs.  As already said by another poster, your best bet is to ask for the pedigree.  No breeder wuld be put off by this, and most would welcome it as a sign of a keen interest.
bye
Gwen
