Hi,
I'm requesting help for a friend. His bitch, a yorkie cross, has had 6 puppies. He wants to know if he should give her any food supplement. Also, the bitch is trying to move the pups and herself to a position behind the settee. Is there a problem here or is it normal?
Thanks
Annieeee :)

Hi Annieeee,

you say your friends girl is trying to move her puppies behind the setee?? is she not in an area where she feels her puppies are safe then? is she just in the living room area with a bed for her and her puppies? if this is so, I would suggest your friend either cages an area off for her, or finds a seperate room where the bitch would feel safe with her puppies. I`d also suggest your friend got a heat lamp for a constant suppy of heat for the puppies, and a whelping box with pig rails so the new mum doesnt squash her babies. most new mums dont wish to be stared at or be in an area where they feel their puppies are accessable to all and sundry, they like to be in a quiet area.
With regards to supplements, I personally dont give my bitches any food supplements, just a high quality dried puppy food, with meat mixed in fed 4 times daily, and then i let her have as much lactol ( milk supplement ) as she wishes.
hope this helps
Kelly

( i`d also suggest to your friend that after the puppies have gone to their new homes that he considers getting his girl speyed to prevent further pregnancy`s ;)   )
