Topic Dog Boards / General / Horrible dogs off lead
- By Devo [gb] Date 09.03.04 17:56 UTC
We were walking today with our whippet when three dogs raced at us snarling and snapping at us and our dog, luckily my wife was with me and she was able to grab two of them by the collar while I kept the other off our dog.
After what seemed like ages but was probably only a minute the owner turned up but didn't say a word to us and just called her dogs and walked off.
It was only when we got home we realised one of them had nipped his back thigh (see these whippets are braver than you thought) he's got a couple of puncture wounds but he's not limping or anything, but i'm mad as hell.
Why on earth if your dogs behave like that are they let off lead in a popular dog walking area, sorry I just needed to let off steam.

Hopefully you will have got their details from the ID tags and can then pursue this with the dog warden and police to prevent it happening again to you or anyone else and if you go the vet you can get a statement from him plus photos etc.

I have got house number and postcode, seeing the vets in the morning looking at his leg now hadn't realised quite how much swelling there was.
Think I might ring the vets again.

dog bites are nasty and will need antibiotics to avoid complications; I would go to the vet as soon as possible.

What nasty dogs picking on your gentle whippets. Hope your punctured one is soon better.

Complain to the dog warden. I did and now the person in question in my area keeps them under better control. Mind you his ex wife who came to us for training of her dogs has taught his a thing or to, such as recall etc. So, maybe that helped:)

Thanks both and thanks Tohme for telling us to go to the vets asap, his leg really ballooned in a very short time and he was kept in overnight.
He went from not limping or licking his wound to being in very obvious pain in just a few minutes and then the swelling came up very fast, our vet wasn't very forthcoming with what he thought was wrong even though we asked him repeatedly which really annoyed us.
So we've been worried all night not knowing why it would suddenly swell like that ( any ideas ? ) , got to go now to ring the vets at 10.

Thanks again

i hope he will be ok!

dog bites can be really nasty, think of the germs and bacteria in the mouth! doesnt take long to swell up!

He's back home and fine, the vet said he doesn't think it was just the bite but that it was a reaction to something that entered the wound either when he was bit or afterwards.
Different vet today who was much better and had taken pics of the wound and phoned the dog warden for us, so their forgiven for yesterday.

Hi Steve,
Even tho' your dog has been to the vet, you could give arnica internally for bruising. Hope he/she is ok.:)

I don't know whether this is nasty or cruel but i carry around with me the 'no chew' spray (the awful tasting one) and spray the boogers that come near us.
The amount of dogs that are instantly aggressive towards Dolly is unreal, she is never off the lead anymore unless there are no dogs about so the way i see it is if an irresponsible owner can see my dog leashed but can't be bothered to leash theirs then tough, and to be honest if i hear "He/she's never been like that before" one more time when they've gone for Dolly who by the way has never ever been aggressive,  i'll squirt the flipping owner as well !!

I get fed up of people allowing there dogs to run into the middle of mine when they are on leads. If they dont attack the stranger they turn on each other. And like most of the other posts the owners just walk by as if it is totally natural thing to allow their dog to invade our space.

Well there you go then, as I said on the rabbit discussion more people should train their dogs to behave and stay with them. Interaction is the word I am looking for. If more owners were more interesting to their dogs then we wouldn't get those attacking ours.
