hi all

my bitch had her puppies today
all is well but one pup has a hair lip there don't seem to be a cleft pallet (sp?)  the pup can feed on its own but i have only seen it feed ones. and it does make a clicking nose
my question is can this be sorted out can the vet stitch the lip like they do in children?
i will be taking them all in a few days for a check up but would like to have your views, i have 1 photo if any1 wants to see it

all views are welcome
thank you

I'm not real sure on this, but I do believe that a vet can stitch up the lip. I think this condition allows the pup to feed normally, but I'm sure it feels strange and its not the prettiest thing in the world to look at. Hopefully the pup really doesn't have cleft pallate and you can just have its poor lip fixed and let it live on to live a happy life. I'm sure someone who knows more about this condition will come along and give you a sure answer. =) Good luck with the pups!

Hi Staffie Lover,
I had a litter of Staffies last year, the last one born had a hair lip.
The vet said if it had just been the hair lip, they could do something about it when she was older.
But sadly she had a cleft pallet too,:( so she was put to sleep as she would of died of Pneumonia, due to the milk going to her lungs instead of her stomach.

in dogs today mag there is a pic of a red staffie dog which was born with a harelip. they have problems but some can and do survive, it depends on  the breeder, some have harelip puppies PTS others give them a chance.

hi all

well i am given this little girl a chance, we are off to the vet in the morning to see what can be done.  if she was not feeding or she also had a problem with her pallet then i would have her pts but she is a little fighter so i going to help her

Well Good luck with her. Just make sure that the people who have her (if you don't intend to keep her yourself) are fully aware and don't have any intentions to breed from her (you never know some people!)

My breeder had a pup born with a hairlip, not to major. By the time she was 8 weeks you could barely tell she had one :), it kinda mended itself together. She did have to get up and put her on mom because the rest of the pups would push her off, since her sucksion wasn't the same do to the hairlip but she could drink if there was no puppies fighting for the nipple.

I had one in a litter but he was also born with a cleft pallet and sadly he didn't make it through the night :(. My vet told me with a cleft pallet if they are not to bad that they can sometimes close themselves and if not then sugery is needed.

hi Dollface

i am very sad to say that the little girl did not make it.  We took the whole litter to the vets on Tuesday and when we were there we had her PTS.  the reason being.  on Monday she only feed ones.  i did try to hold here on a nipple but she did not want to know.  i did tube feed her over night but it did not seem to help.  By the time we got to the vets in the morning she was hardly moving.  so i mabe the very hard decision to have her PTS.  i know it was the right thing but it was still hard. :( :( :(

Iam so sorry to hear that :(
You did what was best for her, alot better then her suffering. Focus your time and enjoy the others since they do grow up so fast, you may not have been able to help her but you did by not letting her suffer that was the best gift you could give her. Don't be too hard on your self.

Hello sorry to hear about the pup, but as you say it was for the best. Even though it's sad. Karen
