Hello, am getting a new pup, and hope he will sleep with my older girl in her crate at night. I'm on medication that knocks me out at night, and so will not be able to get up in night. I know it will take longer, but how do I paper train my pup? Shall I leave paper in the kitchen, with the door shut, but with the crate open, and then move the papers nearer the back door as he gets the hang of it, or is there a better way? If he sleeps with my girl will that help him settle at night? Or should I keep him separate from the start, him in the kitchen in his basket, and my older dog in her crate in the hall? Sorry to ramble...thanks for any help....pup is 9 weeks old, older dog, spayed, and 3, and very docile and maternal.
Hello
I personaly would not put new pup in crate with older dog because no matter how maternal she may be, its not her baby and dogs can be unpredictable. Also she would regard her crate as her territory and may resent an intruder in with her. On the paper training I myself dont bother to paper train as I think it gives the wrong message e.g its ok to go indoors. I start putting them out as soon as I get them and go out with them untill they go and then praise them for going. It takes awhile and you have to keep an eye on them all the time but always works in the end. I do put paper down at night. I have never used a crate and just leave pup in the kitchen at night with paper everywhere. That is the only time I use paper though. If you cant get up in the night I would leave the crate door open as the pup may not be able to hold on all night and if it goes in the crate will defeat the object of it,
