i think they can, for the following reasons, Bruce is fascinated by it eyes are always on the screen. And then last nigh when watching life of grime, they were showing a rat infestation, there was music playing and people were talking so no way the dogs could hear the rats and of course the dogs couldnt smell the rats, but tess whom i thought was asleep jumped off the settee and run across the room looking at the telly when she got there the rats had gone so she continued to look for the rats she looked round the back of the telly under the cupboard then patrolled the living room, satisfied that there were no rats she got back on the settee, the low and behold much to her disgust the little blighters were back, she wouldnt settle until the programme had finished and there were no more affending rats :D unfortunely we tried to get apicccy of her but the batteries in the camera run out :(
so what do you think can dogs see the pictures on a tv screen, and what has your dog done?

Years ago, in the days of Shep and Petra, my 1st little yorkie loved Blue Peter !. Another one enjoyed the sheepdog trials on BBC2 (can't remember what it was called - the programme not the dog !). I'm going to introduce my Border Terrier to crufts tonight !.

oh yeah mine were watching both crufts and a life of grime as well last night, and they love watching videos of theirselves too.The funny thing is when they ehar me on the video they all look at me as if to say, but mum you're over there not on tv, it's soo funny...

My dogs are fascinated by dogs and rabbits on television - their ears prick up and they stare intently. They're not interested in watching people or other animals at all.
:)

Hi Tanya,
Definitely! My Briard spends his evenings watching TV, he groans, growls and grumps at it. He was also watching Crufts last night and started to sniff at the TV when the dogs were on. The same way he does when we are out and he greets another dog :-) Bless!!! He shows an interest in most programmes but the animal ones are his favourites, even when the sound is turned down ;-) I used to have 2 GSDs that would sit and watch the Incredible Journey whenever we put the video of it on (how sad are we) Lol

Years ago - my aunt had a lodger who had a small dog (can't remember - maybe a border terrier) called Mungo. It would watch 'Match of the Day' with it's nose firmly pushed against the screen following the ball around, barking like mad :D

My westie bailey also sits watching anything like animal hospital etc. His favourite is greyhound racing or horse racing when they go off screen he runs around behind tv into kitchen looking for them its really funny he also barks at anything with a hat on.

One of my poodles, who has shown not interest in the TV before, was very interested in one of the Schipperkes on the TV when Crufts was on last night. I had to move her out of the way!

im glad that im not imagining things and that there are others who watch the telly, most nights we end up saying 'its the telly' as the dogs go looking for what has made a noise, normally dog barking kids shouting/crying, they go round barking and we end up getting louder as does the telly :D
LOL at dogs hunting rats behind the telly! :D Morse loves cartoons and will sit happily with the girls watching Arthur and Mona the Little Vampire of an afternoon. He dosent bark at other dogs on TV now so I think hes sussed the idiot box.

When I was a teenager we had a Border Collie who started off watching bits of TV, but ended up watching practically anything. We honestly couldn't see the telly for her.
Her favourites were One Man and his Dog and Snooker. And when I say watch I mean watch :D :D She'd watch a whole snooker match, and you know how long they could drag on for. She also would keep diving under the telly expecting to find the pocketed balls. We had to keep shouting at her to lie down as you couldn't see once she started to get excited.
When I had friends round they just couldn't believe it.
All my 3 Staffords watch it for a while if something catches their eye.

Yes- Pip was able to clearly see the dogs on the crufts show with the sound down. He barked whenever a dog came on screen.
Jazz loves watching Monty Python :D :D :D and doggy programmes of course ;)

When Crufts was on last night Max just sat watching the tv constantly, just staring at the screen, but Saffy doesnt watch tv at all if you point her at the tv she looks away. I used to have a Yorkshire Terrier that thought the tv was a window and would see an animal on the screen and then run to the front door to be let out in the garden so he could catch the animal. It was so funny.

Roxy also had a little bark at the doggies on Crufts! I think she got bored that they didn't bark back and came back and sat on my knee. My friends Westie spends her life watching tv. I keep telling them that they'll have to get her glasses one day! :D

Barney doesnt notice the TV at all but Molly loved Creature Comforts (she was fascinated by it for some reason) on Sundays and she watches Crufts too.
Gina :p

Raider loves TV too - particularly animal programmes. He also likes the insurance adverts with Lucky the dog and the car advert with the chap riding the bull. I think he likes the snorting noise it makes more than anything. Spooky has no interest in TV at all.
Years ago we had a cat who watched TV. There used to be a character made out of string on one of the kids programmes - I think it might have been Sesame Street. Every time it talked, the string wobbled about on the screen, and the cat attacked the TV. Very funny.

Molly follows the balls when my partner watches the snooker. When one gets potted, she drops down onto the floor because she thinks it has dropped out of the telly!

Anton has done nothing but growl at all of the dogs on the television when Crufts has been shown this week, he's so funny :d

Thea my Tibetan mastiff girl that passed on last year used to love the tv, and she used to run round looking at the back of the t.v. her favourite was "one man and his dog". Now we have a cat that loves to lay on the bed and watch but she is not fussy she will watch most things

We have a door knocker rather than a doorbell. If you hear the traditional ding-dong type of doorbell on TV, my springer will run to the front door. This has always amazed us and don't know where he got it from!! He takes no notice of barking dogs on TV but my cocker does and has thoroughly enjoyed the Crufts coverage. They don't seem to watch, but do listen.

My dog is addicted to the t.v. Watching crufts or any other animal programmes send her into a complete frenzy and she often charges at the t.v. Once she has settled down she lays watching other animals with a quiet rumbling growl all the way through the programme. Interestingly, she also recognises cartoon dogs, in particulary Clifford the Big Red Dog! And, like others have mentioned, she's keen on Rugby and Football, but gets a little aggressive when the players start running around!

Sasha can definitely see what is going on. She hated the obedience and the Agility. She nearly went mad at the Scottish Terrier but seemed OK with the whippet!!!

Don't know exactly what dogs can see on the TV but an old westie of mine certainly took notice. Many years ago when he was a few months old my husband was due to work away for a few days. The dog never did anything I asked and I would end up chasing him around to get him to do as I wanted!! We videoed various commands (my hubby on the TV) and when hubby was away I played the command I wanted. The dog did as he was told but did become very confused when we played the tape with my husband present. LOL
A cat I had as a child would jump up at the TV if she saw something she liked. She'd jump at birds, balls, anything really.
Our first Bulldog searched frantically behind the TV for ages when I was watching a program about the lions of Longleat. He didn't rest for ages and was very aggitated by the whole thing!

My 2 dogs, are'nt that bothered about the television until the adverts come on, they go wild at the adverts for cat food, in particular the one for Felix, with the cartoon cat- strange.
There was one on a few months ago with a bull in it, was for barclays i think, they both ran for the television, good job it was secured to the stand as it would have gone over. Think they lived up to their breeding on that one, being american bulldogs
My girl watches dogs with interest on tv, but when I show her a video that I have on afghans she really perks up...seems she recognises her own kind! :)
