Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / going off burns
- By co28uk [gb] Date 04.03.04 11:26 UTC
I have been feeding my 6 1/2yr GSd on burns for about 3 months at first she ate it fine then went off of it, e-mailed burns who suggested i mix some water with it, that work for about 2 weeks. So i then sprinkled a little bit of veg oxo on with water that worked for a week now she won't eat it unless i sit by her and keep telling her to eat this has got so bad that she has gone from around 32kg to 28.5.
Can anyone give me any tips on what to do or shall i just change her food

She can't have
meat
tinned dog food
or any food that contains cereal
fish
raw meat
Due to skin problems and digestion problems.
Food she has had before
tinned food (causes diarea SP)
beta
weebox
eukneba
hills
wafcol burns

Hope someone can help me

I think in your earlier posts you mentioned that you had been through various foods all of which your dog eventually turned her nose up to.  If she cannot eat any meat, fish or cereal than obviously she cannot eat any brand of commercial dog food or even raw at all!

Have you had her actually allergy tested?  If not I would go down that route to definitely quantify what she can and cannot eat.

IMHO sitting beside her and feeding her is just making her even more neurotic!  I would just halve the quantity I gave her, put it down and remove it if not consumed within 10 minutes (and remove myself from her vicinity while she was eating, it may be that your presence is making her uncomfortable) and repeat.  This generally focuses the mind and the stomach pretty quickly!

I am not feeding her i am just sitting there telling her to get on with it, she is currently having about 2tbs which will be offered 4 times a day to get her to eat, the other reason i sit there is to make sure the pup doesn't pinch she i very greedy and will pinch it at the first opurtunity.
Yes seh was tested quite some time ago and we was basiclly told to keep away from cereal based food and feed on a more expensive food as this does not always contain cereal, and to also stay away from meat proteins including raw, but fish should be fine, but over the time the allergy for fish came out. This eposode was very bad and ended up stripping her back leg of fur and skin and went on injections tabs and cream plus a cage muzzle when we were out to stop her chewing.

I will try and get her to eat in the kitchen with the door shut and see how will go from there, that way i can remove the dish if any is left before the pup can get to it

There is no commercial dog food that does not contain cereal with the exception of those with potato.  When my dog was allergy tested you could see on a graph quite clearly exactly what it was allergic to and therefore by removing these proteins it was easy to solve.

York test conduct these for you via a blood sample taken by your vet.  It is not cheap but it is cheaper than treating symptoms.

Removing both yourself and any competition may relax your dog about eating; if there is still a problem may be she needs further testing?

Cordelia,

Eggs did not appear on your list, if she likes them then they are a very good food.

It sounds like your dog is allergic to everything - I would have a complete health check run on her.   She may not be suffering from food allergies, or, food intolerance may be a symptom of other problems.  If she is losing weight and completely disinterested in eating then it's likely that food is not the culprit.

sorry tried eggs but no good.
That was my next thing on the list to have check up done to see if there is any probs with there. Think i will do it tonight and hopefully we will get to the bottom of it.

Have you thought about giving her immune boosting supplements? It sounds as iff her immune system is very weak??
Some supps. to consider are; estherC,echinacea, spirulina. These are just a few of the myriad of things you could try.
People have completely rid their dogs of allergies just by giving them immune boosting herbs.

Have you tryed putting her food in the microwave for about 10-20 seconds before you feed her, as seems to bring the oils and the flavour out and makes it smell tastier, We used vitamin B12 on one of our dogs and it helped her appitite
