Topic Dog Boards / Health / Too soon to spay after 1st Season?
- By JoBasset [gb] Date 03.03.04 16:32 UTC
Hiya
Although my Vet has said that Rosie (8mth old basset) can be spayed 4 weeks after her first season (which has passed with no problems whatsoever), I thought 4 weeks was very soon, so I booked her in for the 12th April...which is exactly 2 months after her 1st day in season...my question is....do you still think this is too early?
As ever, I appreciate your opinions on this...I have learnt so much off you all already and thank you so much in advance

As long as she isn't clearly having a phantom, she should be fine.

Thank you so much JG .... you are a fantastic mind reader :D ....that too was part of my consideration/worries behind the question (didn't want to droan on)... she isn't showing any signs at all .... and wondered if this was another factor behind waiting :)
We'll just take it each day at a time....see if any signs develop up until that date ....can always cancel it ... but you've put our minds at rest, that even if she doesn't develop signs of a phantom ....we can go ahead.
There are so many things to consider

Hi Jo,

The usual recommendation is to spay three months after the first day of a bitch's season.  This assumes that a bitch would cycle against the average, every six months.  Of course, until a bitch has a second season you don't know whether their cycles would come sooner or later than average.

From what you've said above - you probably are following your vet's advice.  He must have meant 4 weeks after her first season ended - and you are counting two months from the first day (not the last day). :-)  So, you have both ended up at pretty much the same point in time.  I would count out 12 weeks from her first day of season and have her spayed on that week or the week before.

Hiya Stacey

Dduurrhh ! Probably was what they meant about the 4 week time span ! .....  thanks for pointing that one out :)  (Given up the red wine during the week and don't think its helping :( )
The penny has now dropped ...thanks to you
