As an ambulance went past us last night, one of my daughters piped up "Who would we ring if we were out somewhere and Sparky was badly hurt, Mum?" and I have to confess I didn't know. I said we would probably have to carry him and get him to a vet, but she said "But sometimes you're not supposed to move them if they get hurt."
So the question is - do vets run an ambulance service for dogs, or is it a case of carry them to the car? I have the vet's number logged into my mobile in case I need one when I'm out, but would what would happen if I was up a mountain somewhere? Sobering thought...

Tracy,

From my experiences of calling vets out to emergencies - DON'T DO IT if you can possibly avoid it.  It takes them hours and by the time they arrive the animal has more often than not gone to the kennel in the sky.  Yes, you may hurt the dog more by picking it up but the quickest way to get treatment is to take them to your vet yourself.  Even up a mountain.

NEver had experiance in calling a vet out but some vets do have ambulances for animals but others don't.  It depends on the size of the vets itself if its one person or big 10 practises!!!

Thanks - just so embarrassed that it took one of the kids to bring this to my attention!

I thought about that the other morning when dolly was looking down a suspicious man hole with no cover.
I was in the middle of nowhere didn't know what the nearest street was called and there was no way on earth i could have lifted her but wouldn't want to leave her either.
The best thing i can suggest is always carry a mobile just in case.
