I have to tell you this story. Yesterday my son phoned ,very distraught,to tell me that his beautiful white GSD Shelley, had escaped, and had been killed by a train. He was too upset to tell me what happened, but said he and his wife would drive the 25 miles to see me,as they couldnt bear to be in the house.Family and neighbours had been searching for her on foot and by car for 2 hours, when they saw a RSPCA van pulling in to the local railway station, and they asked if any one had seen her. They were told a white GSD had been hit by a train, and the driver had carried on to the station, and laid her on the platform,as,although badly injured, she was still alive. When the police and RSPCA got there, the dog had disappeared. A railway employee searched the rails for half a mile either side of the station, but there was no sign.We were all distraught at the thought of her lying somewhere badly injured, and my son said he had prayed for the first time in years, that a miracle would happen, and she would be found. Then his mobile rang It was the local police to say a woman had reported finding a GSD and was bringing it into the station in the next 5 mins. A quick phone call to his father in law to go there and an agonising 20 mins wait,it couldn't be her could it? It must be another GSD, If it was her,was she so badly injured she would have to be put down?.Then, a miracle. It was her, uninjured, and none the worse. She had gone up to a little boy who had realised she was lost and had taken her home. The mystery is,she was found 7 miles from home,at the other side of a busy motorway. How she got there is anybody's guess, but can you imagine the relief we all felt? Shelley has severe epilepsy, and is never excersised off the lead. How she got out is a mystery too,as the gate was closed. My son and his wife were overcome with emotion. They were inconsolable at losing their "baby" in such a cruel way,and totally stunned and overjoyed to find out she was alive and unharmed. their sympathies are with the owners of the dog which was hit by the train, but they will never, ever forget one of the most traumatic days of their life,.They couldn't wait to get home and see her again and cuddle her, after thinking she was dead ,and they would never be able to cuddle her again. His prayers were answered

This made my blood run cold. So glad Shelley made it home, what a kind little boy and how good to hear a GSD so gentle and confident as to let the wee man take her home. Hope they all get over their near miss soon. :)

hi As a postscript. The station master at one station had reported a dog hit by a train, and at the station further down the line, staff had reported a white GSD walking along the tracks. She had grease on her paws, which suggests she was on the track. She must have followed it for a few miles, which would explain how she ended up at the other side of the motorway. The miracle is she wasn't hit by a train,as it's a busy line. Also ,if that little boy had walked away and left her,she would have missed her medication and had a seizure. The temperature that night was minus 9 and she may not have survived. She is wary of adults, but loves and trusts children, that's why he was able to take her home.We can't thank that family enough, and have left a substantial reward at the Police Station for them.Shelley is the gentlest dog we have ever known, and apparantly the woman said if no-one had claimed her,she would have kept her,as she is so placid. She is now going to be microchipped, and a name tag stating she has epilepsy and needs medication, which in hindsight we should have done, but as she is never off the lead, and the garden is normally secure,we didn't bother. Her name tag had come off only 3 days before, and they hadn't gotten around to getting a new one. Another lesson learned. Thank God it all ended happily, but it could all have been so different, that's why we think it is miraculous
