Hi,
O fell in love with the Bernese last year after actually meeting one for the first time. I have since spent time reading about them etc and am thinking of buying one sometime in the future, with the intention of showing it. I am a complete novice, though have had experience with showing ponies - slightly similar?!! Just wondered what anyone thought about this breed and complete beginners to showing - are they particulatly difficult to show, etc, any pointers, advice would be much appreciated!. I have had dogs all my life: Alsations and Golden Retrievers (3 of these at the Mo) so am not a beginner in that sense.
Thanks
Sally

Hi Sally,
They are gorgeous, aren't they! :) I know Dr. Willis has a good book out on them. Quite indepth on the breeding/husbandry side of things. Don't know much about showing them, but I do know that they can be quite difficult to get ahold of. If you do decide you would like one, you might want to find at least two breeders you are comfortable with and get on both of their waiting lists.

dr willis's wife, helen davenport breeds bernese too, theyre normally quite placid as a breed and fairly easy to stack up,i dont think theyre asked to move a lot either ,i could give you helens website address if you would like it---write to my email address in my profile

They are a lovely breed but can be heartbreaking, they can get a number of illnesses and they don't all live to a ripe old age unfortunately. I am sure if you've been reading about them that you will know about this. I have a friend who occ. breeds them.
