I'm not sure what Dawn means either but I would guess she means the registered owner with the Chip Registering company, if that is so she should ask the relevant company not the vet but would guess that the Chip company will have to check with the previous owner that you have indeed bought the dog. If they do not check properly there is little point in having your dog chipped anyway as anyone who stole it could have it changed to their name. They may even wish to wait till the KC has changed the dog to your ownership.

when shiba was chipped the vet told me that IF i sold her onto someone then i would have to ring the chip co and inform them of the new owners details.
