Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / pet insurance advice for a toy poodle

We have recently acquired a 9 month old toy poodle. I have looked on the internet at insurance options, but there is quite a big difference in some of the premiums. Is it true in this instance that you get what you pay for or are some insurance policies really better value than others?

we have tried several but our last company liquidated. Since then i have gone with asda. Its about £7 or so per month. I have got 4 insured with them and when I made a claim there was no problem. You can look at their website or pick up a leaflet in store

I insure my two dogs with Direct Line for around £13 per month. Not long after taking the insurance out one of my dogs ran off and was hit by a car ... vet bills came to over £800 and Direct Line paid it all direct to vets ... absolutely no complaints of concerns with them to date. I simply paid the excess.

hi,
as i vet nurse i deal a lot with insurance companies and my advise would be stick to one with a life time cover, like pet plan or pet protect. please avoid cheaper supermarket ins or ones like direct line. we have nothing but trouble with these cheaper insurnace policies and they are only a 12 month policy. this means if your dog gets a life long illness eg arthritis which will need medication for the rest of the dogs life, the cheaper insurenace will only pay for 12 months then at renewal exclude that condition and not pay any more! this leaves you to foot the bill as no other insurnace co will cover a pre existing condition.
i have my own 2 with pet plan and my oldest has Exocrine Pancreatic Insuffiency and needs treatment costing at least £50.00 a month not including vet consultations or routine blood tests to check his pancreatic function. petplan have paid without question and i know they will pay for the rest of his life, good thing too as he is only 5!
hope this helps,
kelly.

Hi

I have always in the past used Pet Plan for all my animals and never had a problem except their price seemed to go up every year, also living in London the premiums were very high. I have recently changed to Tesco and the cost is aprox £16.00 per month for our Black Lab and 2 cats. Their insurance offers a lifetime cover and I found them exceptionally helpfull on the phone. They also cover for injery from the day you take out the policy, although illness is not covered for the 1st 14 days.

I have not had to make a claim yet so am yet to see how they respond, however I do know someone insured with Tesco car insurance and they sang their praises after making a claim.

Good luck with whoever you decide to go with.
