Topic Dog Boards / General / Exporting a Pomeranian

I want to export a Pomeranian to Spain.   I'm wanting to go myself, I'm booking the flight tomorrow,  I have arranged the export licence, had her rabies vaccinated etc.  I phoned Monarch to organise booking her onto the flight and they gave me an animal exporting companies no.  The company are asking £300.00!!!!  I'm going with her, she weighs 3 lbs in total, how can they ask this price?

Surely I should be able to arrange through Monarch the exporting?  Has anybody had any experience of this?  My friend inSpain said that his friend brought 2 large dogs over from England to Spain recently and it cost less than £200.

I'm sure that I'm being taken for a ride.  Any advice would be greatly rec'd.  I'm supposed to be taking her in 2 weeks time.

Last year, I sold an Aussie pup to a lady in West Senegal - (she's an American who had lost her 14yr odl Aussie the year earlier).  Anyway, she flew in via Paris and was able to take the puppy (who weighted 8 kils) back cabin class.   I'll try and find out which airline she used.

You will find wildly different prices between airlines, even going to same destination.  And a lot insist on using a shipping handler.  Dont think any airlines flying out of the UK will carry in the cabin, as DEFRA export rules insist on shipping containers which would not meet in cabin regulations.  Perhaps Margots Lady swapped into the cabin on the Paris leg of the journey?  I know someone who regularly takes dogs back and forth to Spain, but unfortuantley she is away this weekend (Poodle Show Sunday) but I can ask on Monday if you have not resolved it.

If you are travelling with the puppy, then you should be able to book him/her as your own personal baggage, this will work out much cheaper. You don't need to use a shipping agent if the animal is going to be accompanied on the same flight. Ask the Airline to book the pup on the same flight as part of your allowance, good luck. Shipping agents always have to add their own charges on, that's why their prices are high. The airline will have to know the measurements of the crate the pup is travelling in, & will work out a price from that. £300 is way too much for such a small dog, it's about that price to ship a medium size dog all the way to the US. Sue.

Hi Skyota, you cant make direct comparison just becasue of size, the charges even to the US vary wildly depending on airline, and a lot wont accept as part of baggage allowance, will only carry  as cargo.  We were amazed last year to find that shipping to Finland was actually going to cost twice as much as shipping to the US!  It is always puzzeling and seems unfair that costs of shipping from the US are a lot less than shipping to it.  We have found, as a rough rule of thumb, that UK airlines are more expensive for shipping dogs that foreign ones.

It's not a pet passport dog, she's going to live there.  She's going to be a total pet, no papers, no breeding no showing etc.  It's actually going tocost more to ship her over there than we are actually asking fo her!

Hi just had a thought, I know some people/dogs from Spain who will be coming over for Crufts, and driving back again.  I could put you in touch about them transporting pup, if you would like?  I suppose it depends on the timing for you.

Gwen...that is true regarding shipping to the US is more expensive than shipping from. I was quoted £400 to ship to Russia last year, & the pup was only 10 weeks old & in a small crate. As it happens, he never left because of the health certificate being on hold at the time. I have noticed that the shipping from the US has increased if you are using the passport system, another way for airlines to make more money!  The maximum i have paid to ship a dog over here is $500, now it's jumped to $800 because he is coming on the passport, it's a rip off. Hi Diane, pretty sure the flight has to be schedule as the other type, charter, can`t transport animals. Think it`s to do with airports & it`s only Gatwick or Heathrow. I brought 2 of my Labs over when they were pups on Iberia & they were allowed on the plane with me, in a cage & cost me nowt :) Didn`t need an export license & if the pup is under 12wks doesn`t need any vaccs, only vet signed health certificate. Also if dog is under certain weght can still come on plane with you & only rabies vacc is required. Don`t think it`s changed cos friend brought adult dog same way from Gatwick & charged excesses baggage & went in hold? couple of yrs ago, cost him less than ticket but very important to have correct size of travelling cage.

Christine, Spain.
Just re-read your post, dogs only 3lb, ring the airline direct about schedule flights &/or airports that allow animals, she should be able to go on plane with you :)
