Hi all my rottie Troy is 10mths and he is crated when alone and at night due to cat chasing and chewing but he is still whining i have tried clocks, covers, radio, telling him no, ignoring him and nothing seems to work he whines for 5-10mins but sometimes longer he is quite innsecure and is ok if i go upstairs he will wait at bottom but if all the family are in another room or upstairs he whines then aswell please help me

How long is he alone for in the crate? Is he really tired when he goes in? I know that helped Cracker to settle down. Have you tried a Kong? You can fill it with a portion of their daily food, (soft meat) and a few treats. It takes a while for my pup to eat it all and it keeps him busy when hes alone for a while. Just a few pointers, which you may already have tried! Lisa

Troy is only ever left for a 4 hour period except of a night and even then i dont go to bed till 2am and my other half lets him out for a wee at 7am he is walked for a hour in the evening and if we are going out he goes out before he is crated and i have tried kongs and he either leaves them or starts whining once hes finished and as you can imagine a 10mth old rottie can make a lot of noise which then wakes my baby and we have a vicous circle

Have you tried any homoeopathic rememdies ?? To relax him before he goes to bed

try giving him a roast bone just at nights-the ones you get from the pet shops, that might keep him quiet, or try covering the cage, ---ive not had a rott ever that whined on after the puppy stage and getting first used to a cage, -----its obviously harder for you as your trying to keep your baby asleep therefore having to go back to him, they are very clever and he''ll know  it works,

Are you sure the crate is big enough and comfortable for him? :) I am sure it is, but its worth mentioning. Do you fee he is lonely and anxious due to being separated (ie is he separated from  you during the daytime at all? If so he is more likely to be used to it.) If not, and he is only separated at night, he may be genuinely anxious and sadly it can get worse rather than the dog accepting its position. But you can also train the dog to accept being alone a bit during the day using child gates etc and making it pleasant, giving stuffed Kongs to chew and gradually adding duration..... :)

It might be worth considering a DAP diffuser. This emits pheromones just like those from a bitch with young puppies and has a calming effect. To be fair, not all owners believe they work, and it has had mixed results, but i and several others have ben very pleased with them (mine helped my dog a lot with fireworks problems :) )

They cost approx. £25 from most vets and last about 4 weeks if they are continuously plugged in (which they should be).

I do hope you get it sorted out - we all need our sleep!!
