Our tiny Maltese was yesterday diagognised with Pancreatitis, she is slightly better today and there is know sign of any blood although her gums and tongue are still pale. The vet has given us some perscription food for her which we are hand feeding her every few hours, we are also syringe feeding her water and Kaogel ever few hours. Does anyone have any experience of this disease. We are terribly worried.

German Shepherds respond v v v well to being fed raw pigs pancreas (this can be purshased from raw pet food suppliers.) A GSD would need about a pound weight per day as part of its normal ration. The results are outstanding - firm stools in under 48 hours and weight starts to go back on after a couple of weeks. Great care has to be taken when handling the pancreas - wear rubber gloves - store the weeks supply in a sealed box in the fridge. The dog can lead a normal healthy life so long as you can keep feeding the pancreas without any drugs and medication.

Hope this is some help

Pancreas is fed to dogs with pancreatic insufficiency which is a totally diferrent condition to pancreatitis. The former is a disease where the dog is ravenous but thin and has loose stools because he isn't digesting his food. The later is an infection/inflammation which causes severe abdominal pain, dullness ,vomiting and shock. Often it is best to give the dog nothing to eat or drink for at least 48hrs and they can need to be hospitalised. Once they are on the mend little and often of a low fat diet helps. Hope your dog is on the mend.

Sorry, I stand corrected!  Myself and many others incorrectly call EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency) "pancretitis". Just hope my info might help someone with a dog with EPI

No offence was intended Lynn. Your advice re feeding pancreas to dogs suffering from EPI is good if the enzyme replacement tablets or powder doesn't work. I have found sourcing the pancreas difficult.
