Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Blood in Stools

I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions for me.  I have a 10 year old staffy who started in November passing stools with patches of blood on them.  I took him to the vets who gave me kaogel which made no difference.  I was then given Sulphasalazine which again made no difference.  His stool was tested and showed it contained undigested fat.  A bile acid test was then carried out which said there was a loss of hepatic function which my vet tells me means the liver is not working correctly and to help with this problem has put him on Hills l/d prescription diet.  Prior to the bile acid test the blood would appear as bright red one day (similar to a haemeroid that has burst) the following few days a black patch, then normal for a couple of days and black patches again.  Ever since the bile acid test (my vet thinks it is coincidence) the red blood is more frequent virtually every other day with black patches in between.  He has only been on l/d diet for just over a week, but with the red blood becoming more frequent I asked the vet for some anti-inflamatories to calm his colon.  He has given me Kaobiotic.  I am not totally convinced with the diagnosis, as all the research I have done suggests he should have other symtoms, i.e loss of appetite, bloat, etc etc.  The only thing he does seem to have developed recently is muscle spasms, and his legs will twitch when he is resting or about to go to sleep.  Not sure if it is related, but he had his spleen removed last July after collapsing.  It was very enlarged and had leaked alot of blood into his abdomen.  I would be truly grateful if anyone could give me any help or suggestions.

Thanks

Julie, W Yorks.
