Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / nightime toilet training

Hi there.  Can anyone help with the above subject please?

We have been the proud owners of an 11 week old lab pup for the past two weeks (got him at 9wks).  He took to toilet training through the day no bother but seems to have problems controlling himself overnight.  He is put to bed at around 11pm and wakes us at around 4.30am each morning with his crying.  Most mornings his cage is messed (poos & pees can sometimes be on both newspapers & bedding) - on the odd occasion it's clean/dry and he goes straight outside to relieve himself.  We always tend to him at 4.30am as we can't tell if he's crying because he's messed or because he needs out. He then returns to bed and wakes again at around 6am (when he hears us getting up).

He was originally getting four feeds a day, the last of which being 9pm.  We reduced the number of feeds (but not the daily allowance) to 3 a day in order to bring his last meal forward to 6pm so that he'd have plenty of time to do his stuff before bedtime but this doesn't seem to have worked - he is clearing his bowels regularly but still messes through the night.  Feeding times are 7.30am, 1pm and 6pm.  We always give him small treats for doing his business outside so he is "snacking" between meals (Winalot "shapes" or Pedigree "milky bones").

He has plenty of toys/water/soft bedding in his crate and for the first couple of nights we left the doors open so he could adjust to it, giving him the full run of the kitchen.  We did leave an outside light and a radio on to start with but have since taken these away.  He's a very loving pup and spends most of the day playing or sleeping at our feet.  Nightime is the only time he's left alone.  We know he's capable of having clean nights and are confused as to why he should mess some nights and not others.

Thanks to anyone who can help :)

PS.  Sorry for such a lenghty message.  I hope I've given enough info as I'm currently having problems with the server and can only login as a visitor at the moment.  Hope to sort this soon!

I think 11 weeks is extremely young to expect your pup to be clean throughout the night .
As long as he is let outside before bedtime and given treats as you say for "doing his business" he will eventually get the message . If he is clean during the day then he is doing very well for his age .
What time do you rise in the morning and go to see him ?
Maybe you could get up either in the night to let him out ( which isnt very practical especially if you work) or get up slightly earlier to let him out .
With perseverance and patience he will get there but as i say he is VERY young to expect total clean day and night .
