When we get our puppy in the Spring it is our intention to let her sleep in the house and use something like a puppy playpen or crate to keep her out of mischief at night or when she needs a break whilst we are around. However we are also intending to try and get her used to an outside kennel and run during the mornings whilst we are at work ( a neighbour will be able to take her out for a walk). Does anyone have any advice how we should approach this. Should we concentrate on the crate training. Or should we work on gradually leaving the puppy for increased periods of time in the kennel ( or a combination of both)

Would suggest you start with about 5 mins, and work your way up till you can leave her for an hour or more without her being worried. She needs entertainment in the kennel and also to know you will be coming back.
