Topic Dog Boards / Health / Heart testing in Boxers

Hi.
I got my Boxer dog heart tested yesterday and came away with a fantastic score of zero. I've been looking into the breed on the whole and come across a few postings stating that this is very rare in a red. (My baby.. Robbie, is a red) Can anyone confirm or deny this statment? Do I have the wonderdog I always believed I had? It would be lovely to hear from anyone who can help x

Congratulations you must be on top of the world, contact your breed club or try your breed note writer in the "Dog World" or "Our Dogs" they are good for raising topics in there colums and getting feedback

I post a response to your question from Dr Cattanach who was the breed genetics advisor
and has been involved with the Boxer heart-testing scheme since it's start 10 plus years ago.

"Incidence of grade 0 is low anyway, < 20%.
Incidence of reds is also low.
There is no reason by colour why reds should have different scores from
brindles.
There could be a difference just because of different ancestry, but this is
doubtful as this was never seen when reds were more numerous and there has
certainly been no improvement in scores as the incidence of brindles has
increased".

Hi,
Just wanted to ask more about heart testing, I own two boxers and would like to get them both done, could this be done at my local vet? What is involved in the testing, how is it done?
Also congrats to fat lass and Robbie.
Luv Lou

See the website

I'm sorry I'm useless at doing links...
This will explain more about heart-testing, give you lists of the KC names in
alpha order and in males and females (dogs and bitches).
This list is all dogs that have been tested and achieved a clear score of either 0 or 1
or dopplor clearance for aortic stenosis. These are the dogs considered ok to breed from.
Any higher scores should not be bred from.
Vets that specialise in cardiology do the testing, it's cheaper when done at the breed dog shows.
£7.5 per dog as opposed £30-50 at the cardiologists vet centre.
There are a few breed shows coming up with testing.
If you let me know what part of the country you are I can give you contact details.
They test by stethascope, listening to dogs heart.
To get onto the clear list the dogs have to be a minimum of 12 months old.
Any tests results prior to the dog being a year old aren't allowed onto the list.

Hi
I live in North Yorkshire. It would be great if you could let me know of breed shows coming up in this area.
Cheers
