Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Pro-biotics? Advice please chaps...

Hi guys,

My vet has just suggested putting Isla on 'Protexin' for a couple of weeks to see if it helps with her general despondancy. (She was on anti-biotics for about 3-4 weeks when she lacerated her foot at the end of last year). Has anyone used this before?.  I know that a lot of people use pro-biotic yoghurt but her stomachs not too happy with dairy food, even in small quantities over a long period of time.  I have looked on the protexin website and they sell a supplement that you can use everyday- is it worth it, or do you only use it when the digestive system is bad, stressed etc?

Sorry for so many questions, but I need to get it right.

Cheers chaps,
Ali :)

I'm using it at the moment with Dakota as he's been on Antibiotics for 5 wks with his feet also, it is worth it as it helps to sort out their gut flora which is what they lose with the antibiotics, it also contains kaoline which helps to bind the food in their guts ergo stopping the dire rear which in dakota's case on a very strong antibiotic for another 3 wks is not gonna be much fun without the Protexin.  I only use it when their systems are under stress or when they've grabbed something really ripe whilst out on a walk that you just know is gonna go straight thru them.

There are other probiotics that do not contain kaolin made for pets; or you could get acidophilus tablets from Holland and Barrett etc

Hello Ali,
I used 'Protexin' last year after my dogs had tummy problems. My vet gave them antibotics which I followed on with the Protexin - this is slow acting but helps with getting the bacteria back to normal in the gut, not sure about if this is much help with your problem but I do know that when I phoned the people who supply and manufacture protexin they were very helpful.

Protexin has been brilliant when my lot have eaten something they shouldn't have - comes as a dry powder, and you need very little of it - about covering the end of a teaspoon handle a day.

Hello all!

Thanks for the info.  I think that I'll keep Isla on it until it runs out (about 5 days I think) and then I may invest in some for the future.  In the last 24 hours Isla has brightened considerably, don't know if it's the Protexin or the extra hugs, but I know that she's feeling better as she rolled in something disgusting today and then proceeded to 'show' my pup how to do it.  Judging by what the pair of them pick up when we're out walking, maybe I'll get a large tub!

Anyway, thanks again for the advice, its so nice having friendly posters to ask questions to.

Cheers Ali :)
