Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Dane not eating properly

I have a 4 month old Great Dane and he was eating well and never missed a meal, recently my partner started putting water in with his biscuit as he wasn't drinking that much. After a few days he started not wanting his food so we changed back to just dry biscuit, since then he has been very funny when it comes to meal times he just sits there and stares at you, he has been eating but not half as much as he was. He was having 4 meals a day but now we're lucky if he has two. He hasn't lost alot of weight but we are just concerned that the longer he goes without the worse he will get.
I hope there is someone who can give me some help on this matter.

It could be that your puppy is now ready to go down to three meals a day...could be worth giving that a try :)

Have you tried talking to his breeder about this, as it is unusual for such a youngster to be eating complete food dry anyway.

My dane (Dizzy) is about the same age and has been on 3 feeds a day for a good while now.

She's fed on Burns mostly and I water it to help prevent bloat as much as anything else. I tend to use warm water as this brings the smell out for her but then, once it's soaked it all up, I add a handfull still crunchy to give her the texture she loves :)  You could try adding just a forkfull of something smelly - tuna, pilchards, tripe or even tinned dog/cat food - along with the warm water as this makes a gravy and Dizzy goes mad for it! I often use the tesco's really cheap cat food as it melts away to nothing, smells lots and has a very low protein rate.

(does that make sense, I'm loaded with the cold at the minute!)

I did try Skinners dog meal to 'fatten' her a bit but (although she likes it) the pooh to food ratio is awful and I'm sure I must scoop up more than she actually eats

Thankyou for your reply and i shall try what you suggested, i only managed to get 2 meals down him yesterday again but he always seems hungry, he does like his food as he eats it if you hand feed him. Is he just being lazy?

It sounds like he is bored with it to be honest - what does he have food wise? You could try him with some raw green tripe - danes love tripe :)
