has anyone ever had any experience of there adult dogs blood not clotting, that wasn't to do with poisoning and what was the outcome, only a friend of mine has a dog and suddenly his blood won't clot.
thanks Barbara
This sounds like Haemophelia, it is hereditary. I have never had a dog with it, or know what the answer is but I do know that is why you are recommended to test boys of certain breeds like German Shepherds. Is he a Shepherd? Perhaps you could do a Google search.
Sorry I was no help at all really.
Hi I had a puppy with parvo whos blood wouldn`t clotbut he was quiet poorly with parvo & we couldn`t stem the blood, it just wouldn`t clot & it was suggested I ask my vet treating him to give him Vit.K intraveinously. From the little research I know of it it`s supposed to help?. No experience of what your dog has & it`s just a thought but it might be worth a mention to your vet??? Hope he gets sorted soonest :)

no it's not haemophelia and weve gone back through the generations and not one of them has had anything like this before, but I will mention the Vit K. thankyou.

Is there any chance this dog may have eaten rat or mouse bait, may be in a dead rodent. If so the Vit K is the antidote.

The rat bait was the first thing their vet thought of, he has had some more blood taken so fingers crossed we shall soon know what is causing it. These dogs are such a worry.

Von Willebrands disease? What breed is it?
Dawn.

He's a 2 year old lab, I think they have tested for Von Willebrands but the results are not back yet

Hi
Low platelets can have a number of courses, Rat poisoning, Thrombopathia (the bone marrow is trying to make platelets but they are disformed), Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia (for some reason the imune system is attacting it's own platelets). It has also been known in dogs that have had asprin, chemotherapy, dogs with SLE, and as a reaction to Gold Injections.
I'm sure i haven't covered all the causes, but i believe these to be the most common after VWD.
