Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How much food??

Hi all, have successfully made the switch from Beta puppy to Burns mini bites for my 11 week old lab but she seems as if she is starving!

Just tried to weigh her by holding her in my arms on the scales and she is roughly 13kg but that can't be accurate although she is a big build- so according to the packet she should be having round max 200g per day - is this really enough?  I know labs are greedy and i don't want to make her fat, but like i say she wolfs her food down so fast, then looks at you for more and i feel awful!  So, I want to check with you all, what do you think?

Thanks
S

Hi Sara

If it were me, I would initially stick with the recommended level and just see how she goes over the next few days, watching out for her dropping any weight.  If you think she is, up it a little bit, if she is gaining too much weight, drop the amount.  If you are really concerned though, why not give Burns a ring, or send them an email; their customer service is very good indeed.

Hi Sara,
As Lesley says, I would stick with the recommended amount - you will soon know whether it is too much or not by the way your puppy looks.  Don't feel awful if she is looking at you for more food - my two dogs do that, as they're just plain greedy!  I read in a book once that if a dog is gulping its food too quick, you can put a tennis ball in the bowl, which is supposed to slow them down a bit as it moves around (that is, if the dog doesn't take the ball out first!).

my 6 and a half month old parson russell has recently moved onto burns mini bites too, she's not an incredibly large eater but she always wants a little more than the stated amount too

I have just started my 8 month bordeaux on the venison and rice from Burn's, when I rang to ask about the correct feeding amount they told me to give him a bit extra as he was a growing dog. I would ring Burns or email them and they will recommend the amout to feed just to be on the safe side

Labs are always starving :D  That is why you see so many obese ones :(

Thanks everyone, will keep an eye on her as you suggest coz i definately don't want an obese lab - know too many people who have done this to their dog and ended up without them years before they should!
