Topic Dog Boards / Health / Teeth that won't fall out..

Hi, just wondering if anyone could give me a bit of advice please. I have a 6 month old Labrador who has one baby tooth that still hasn't fallen out even though his adult tooth is fully grown behind it. The baby tooth is slightly discoloured and wobbly. He is in no pain or discomfort with it. Does anyone know if it will just fall out on its own or should i take him to the vets? Thanks, Sarah.

If it's wobbly and you've given him hard chews and it still has not fallen out in a couple of weeks I would take him to the vet.  Try playing tug with him also - use a sock or a rope toy and hope that the baby tooth gets caught in it and comes out with a tug.

Retained baby teeth are not unusual, but they can sometimes rot or make the gum sore and infected.

I had to take my dog to the vet the other day for that same reason. My boys teeth never even got loose,so the vet pulled them.

I'm sure i had an easier time when my daughter was teething! Thanks for your reply, Sarah.

If he's a show dog, get it pulled ASAP or else it could make the rest of his teeth crooked.  But if not, I'm not sure what it would do other than look funny, so I'd take other peoples' advice on that.

My lab went through the same thing.  His "fang" tooth was very brown (horrid!) and wobbly but just wouldn't come out.  I gave him loads of nylabones to chew on and it did eventually come out, his big tooth just pushed it out in the end.  He did however, develop sinusitis because of the pressure on his nose.  He was sneezing like mad bless him.

Hi guys,
I've just been through exactly the same thing with Kester.  He had retained both of his baby upper 'fangs' and although we tried playing tugger and nylabones, only one came out.  He went in last week to have his other one out- my vet said that if you don't have them removed, they can stop the adult canine teeth from moving into their correct place.
I wouln't worry though, your pups still quite young yet.  If you're worried about it, go to see him, but I'd give it another month to see if you can 'help' it on its way first.
Good luck and get tugging!
Cheers Ali :)
