Hi, does any one know, if my puppy had already had two combo shots from viruses and other deseases (at 6 weeks and 12 weeks) can she still catch them? I did not let her sniff any other dog for 7 days after the second combo shot was done. Right now a little by little I let her sniff other pups/dogs. I am planning on taking her to puppy class this weekend. Are we safe? And is there any way to prevent her from getting sick besides the shots the vet already gave her???
Thank you, Alina D.

No shot is ALWAYS 100% safe in ALL dogs. You walk outside and bring into the house all the germs your dog could catch etc etc. IMHO lack of socialisation up to 16 weeks is potentially far more damaging than exposure to a few germs.

TOHME "lack of socialisation up to 16 weeks is potentially far more damaging than exposure to a few germs"
Really, why so?

The mental damage caused by lack of socialisation can leave a dog permanently afraid of normal life - and a fearful dog is often an aggressive dog. That is why it is so vital to get a pup out and about safely (usually carried) before it is safe to go on the ground. The main learning 'window of opportunity' closes at about 16 weeks.

Because a lot of dogs have lifelong inabilities to cope because they have not been socialised enough when young. The window for socialisation closes at 16 weeks therefore the longer we keep our dogs "isolated" the less time we have available for making them "bombproof" with all sorts of people, animals, situations etc etc etc. More dogs are euthanased because of behaviour problems than die from lepto, parvo etc etc

oh no, this is bad, I did not let her be with other dogs unitl this week, we just started and she is now 12 weeks. (I am really messed up with the age of my dog, before I thought she was only 2 and half months, then my hubby and I counted the weeks and we thought she was 3.5 months, and right now I counted exaclty the weeks from the date she was born, November 16th, and it looks like she only 12 weeks. Are we too late to socialize with other dogs? Please tell me we are not... She is not afraid of them yet, but she is afraid of humans, especially of unusual sounds behind the door or outside when dogs are barking somewhere far away. She runs to me and hides between my legs. Or tries to climb on me asking to pick her up.

Relax of course you are not too late, it is just the earlier you get started the better it is. Remember dogs have to see trains, buses, cars, bikes, pushchairs, wheelchairs, crutches, people with hats, beards, glasses, carrying bags, shopping trolleys, cows, horses, cats, birds, etc etc etc. It is not just dogs :D

Hi Tohme. I d love to follow your advice, but it is sooooooo cold outside we have -5 F and snow everywhere, dont know how much it is in C, but I am trelling you, even I am all bundled up get cold under my clothes, so the most we can tay outside is for 5 mins. Poor thing, when was smaller, would shiver as I would pick her up, now she grew a bit and is getting adjusted to the cold weather. But still as soon as she is done with her business she turns around and pulls me back home. And she weighs more than 25 lbs. It is a lot to carry, dont you agree? Hopefully this puppy class offered by GSD American Club will have an indoor area where they could play and stuff. Please let me know if you have suggestions on how to get her used to other scents, people with beards/hats, trains, we have not accomplished this yet, I would have to drive to my sister's, she lives out in the country, so perhaps we can find some horses there too. But I am telling you it is pretty cold outside.
