I wonder if you can help?
We have a 6-month old male puppy.  On Sunday we were walking him and when we went to clear up his poo, we noticed that there was a big white thing in it.  It was the same consistency as pasta.
Then, this morning (Tues), we were woke up early by him retching.  He was sick twice with mainly watery bile, but the third time, he brought up exactly the same thing again, a long white thing which looked like pasta (like cannelloni not sure if it's spelt right!).
We've just got back from the vets, who has given us Parafin Liquid to give to him three times a day for the next two days to hopefully bring anything up (if he's swallowed something) that shouldn't be there. When the vet pressed his stomach, Wallace started retching as if he was going to be sick again.  We are going back on Thursday.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be or have any experiences?  My first reaction was that it was tapeworm, but the vet didn't seemed to think it was.  I haven't seen him eat anything that resembles what he brought up (and out!) but he's often in the garden sniffing about and making a nuisance of himself!

Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated,
Worried (and now tired!)

Tape worms are flat like a tape - what you have sounds like round worm, not sure about LP think the pup needs worming. When was he last done?

Hi Jackie,
He was done just before Christmas.  The vet gave us some more worming capsules today, but I didn't ask if I could use at the same time as LP?
To be honest, my gut feeling was that it was worms- he is not lethargic or acting ill in any other way, he's just as bouncy as normal.
I might give them a ring in a bit to ask and worm him again.
Thanks again,
Lucy

May be he vomited the medication at Christmas before they had effect, he would be due to be done again now anyway, but I would have thought that by 6 months he should be more or less free. Have you wormed every month since you have had him and what is the vet giving you.

Lucy,

Dogs do not retch up tape worms.   Signs of tape worms are bottom dragging - rubbing bum on carpet, etc.   Tape worm segments/eggs are also expelled in excrement.  They look like grains of rice which might adhere near the anus or you might see them in poo.

If you see it again -- save the poo!  :-(  Most likely he ate something inedible.

Can dogs get it from eating rabbit poo? My pup is picking everything outside starting from wood chops and ending with rabbit and goose poo, we live by the lake and I saw tons of rabbits here. She has been wormed though twice and is taking a preventative from any kind of worms. Should I be more concerned about her geting reinfected over and over again? Can worms survie (in rabbit's and goose poo) in cold weather in winter?

A rescue friend of mine extracted part of a tape worm from a dog's mouth!!  The dog had just come into rescue and had a serious tape worm problem!

Hi Lucy and Wallace. Just wanted to find how your pup is doing. Have you found what kind of worm it was and how is he feeling right now?

Hi Alina,
Well, everything seems ok (touch wood!).

We gave him his dose of liquid parafin twice a day.  now i thought that was meant to make him bring things up and out, but oh no, not Wallace - he actually seemed to enjoy it!  No sick and nothing in his faeces since then so hopefully he is ok.

We took him back to the vets on Thursday and he felt his stomach and seemed to think everything was ok.  He thinks we are both very strange now as we watch his every move to make sure he doesn't eat anything or looks like he's a little bit peeky!

We are worming him today as he's stopped his LP now. Thanks for all the advice!

From Wallace and a not so worried Lucy x
