just got back from dog club with Jack, its only his second week never been before but thought i better as i didnt want Bruce picking up on his bad habits, the plan was to take Bruce when he had had all of his jabs, well ive now decided not to take Bruce as im not happy, the pups are all in half checks which for one ive always been told not to use on pups, the next class which jack would join but is at the mo in a room on his own until he is at the same 'standard' as the other dogs, are all in half checks, i went to this club before 4 years ago and it was frowned upon to use full and half check, all the dogs now have half checks on, and the methods used are aggressive, and Jack being of a nervous dispostion is scared of the trainer, but does everything that is asked of him, i think through fear, as it is indoors as soon as he steps foot outside he goes back to walking on two legs not sitting etc etc so i have decided to stop going as soon as i can find another club, which is where all the champdoggers come in to it, im looking for a training club in the essex area for general training and socialising, where if possible other activities also take place. Ive looked on the K9 events page but are there any other champdoggers in essex that can recommend a club in the south essex area
come on champdoggers ideas please

How about asking at the vets for puppy/training classes?

My girl wears a half check, they are not as restricive as a choke chain. I do agree that aggressive training isn't very good and you must be happy in your training.
Good luck
(I live in Merseyside so no help sorry) :)

Tanya - if you want ringcraft classes there are two locally - one at Bulphan Village Hall on a Monday evening, one at Vange (in the hall behind The Bull) on a Tuesday.
I've also got details (somewhere!!) of the Phoenix Dog Club which is Billericay way, if that is any help!
Margot
yes please margot, i want general obeidence etc as well though
my vets have posters up but dont recommend so that people cant have a go if all goes wrong, im going thurs for Bruces jab but if my memory is correct the only poster for training is for the club that i go to.
My adult lab sometimes has a full check and other times a half check, but i dont walk her on her collar she is walked when on lead on a slip lead, but she never had the restrictive collars on until she was over a year old and her neck muscles were fully developed, i have no problems with anyone using them, but dont agree on puppies wearing them, and i certainly dont agree with a half check being used with force, by force i mean the dog being dragged across the floor by its lead or yanked off the floor because its not listening

I agree, I would not go back in fact I think you were very tolerant in staying. i would have walked out NO ONE but no-one is ever going to treat my Sal like that.

Ohh that made me cringe :( I only use a half check for something to put the tags on :) She wears a halti.
Surely you could report the trainer? Or at least mention to the vet and maybe they won't advertise on their behalf?
