The gal who owns the stud I used before bred to a dog that lost three pups out of five, thier yorkies, I guess they did an otopsy and said the pups died from salimanila. She had been bottle feeding cause mom didn't have enough milk.Could this be from the formula or has anyone heard of this before? Missy

You mean 'Salmonella'? I thought there was more risk with contaminated water?

Sound like poor hygeine in the milk preperation to me - bottle and mixing equipement should be sterlised just as for a human baby. :(

digger That's what I thought. The woman with the pups seemed to be accusing the stud. The stud owner talked to her vet, but I wanted some of your oppinions. Just seemed wierd to me. Personally I feel the woman was neglagent.

Hmm before you jump to the conclusion that anyone was negligent it might interest you to know that Salmonella can be transmitted via a variety of means too many to mention; it can be convenient point the finger but, unless the source has definitely been located, it will remain a mystery.

tohme,  What are some ways it can be transfered? I would really like to know because I'm going to be using this particular stud soon and her vet told her otherwise. If there is something I should be worried about I would like to get some info before hand. Thanks missy

I wouldn't say it came from the stud, it can be transmitted by people, not washing hands is a top one!
Contaminated water is also one i pointed out earlier like say mouse/bird droppings in your water tank then you brush your teeth and there you go!!

You should not be worried; salmonella is ingested that is its route of infection.  What I was trying to get at is that reservoirs of infection are in horses, cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, tortoises, reptiles and people; not to mention actual foods such as eggs, meat etc.

thanks everyone for your input. I also called my vet today and he said pretty much the same. I just never gave it a lot of thought, I guess cause we're careful at home and my dog only eats what I feed her. Definently gives me somthing to remember. I learned somthing new today.:) thanks again missy
