Topic Dog Boards / Health / Panacur vs Drontal

I need to worm my boy again soon.  What are the latest thoughts on the best worming products out there?  He has been wormed on Drontal before and this didn't seem to have any untoward affects so I am tempted to keep him on this.

Prefer to use Dontal Plus as this also gets rid of the common Tape worm, Panacur doesn't.

Have had one dog with an allergic reaction to the Dontal + and used Panacur on that one.

I use Drontal Plus but it does not suit all dogs so if anyone finds a problem then the answer is to use the other.

Best wishes, John

Anything you like to think of will not suit every dog, you only have to see how many have some sort of reaction to wheat to know that dogs like us develop a reaction to substances, food as well as drugs.

The dog I had that was sensitive to Drontrol was only effected twice in 8 years,  that is about 2 occasions out of 32,the way it was explained to me was that it was caused by 3 things the dog, the wormer and an unknown factor, and because the third thing was unknown I had to remove one of the others, in this case, of course, it had to be the wormer. The effect it had was  acute allergic reaction.

why not try the new wormer MILBEMAX kills all known worms and has been approved to use with the pet passport, slightly cheaper than drontal and only needs to be done twice yearly. it kills heartworm, whipworm, roundworm.hookworm, tapeworm, only obtainable from your vet

Can only find the product MILBEMAX for use in cats, can you point me in the direction of a site that gives detail of the product for use in dogs. If would appear that the ingredients are the same as Dontrol so I need more details before I would consider swapping, price is not enough.

both panacur and drontal are good but i would say i prefer drontal and use this more often.i did use lapotol once and all 3 of my dogs were ill.i have heard a new product called incite will be available soon which is supposed to be very good.anyone used or know the score with it.

Have nothing against Panacure and use it on pups but not on adults because it does not do common tape worms, do people who use it use a differen product to treat the tape worm if not what do they do?

Have always used drontal and never had probs with it, i can also buy it on the internet at £33.50 for 20 that is better than vets. It comes with all the relevant info that you need to  give the tablets to your dog.

Jackie - vet mentionned Milbemax to me and the difference is that you dont have to give a tablet per 10kgs - its one of the large (still smaller than Drontal) tablets per 20 or 25kgs (cant remember!) and there are smaller tablets for smaller amounts. Mix and match. Hard to explain - would be so much easier if I could remember the dosage!!

Jackie i was given a leaflet at the vets about Milbemax, there is a web site if its of any help. www.wormfree.co.uk hope that helps

Last time I got the dogs wormed (beginning of Jan) we were given those wormers, I always got Drontal for them previously, but this time we were given Milbermax (they were a lot cheaper because I got both dogs wormed for about the same price as I usually pay for one dog). ;) I didn't ask any questions about why the vet had given us different pills this time, and the girls had no bad effects from taking them.

I like the idea of Milbemax because of the heartworm treatment so when I go for a pet passport I will worm with this.  In the meantime I will stick with Drontal.  Great input - thanks.

I also got the leaflet from the vets - unfortunately their site doesnt tell you dosages etc. :(
