Just wanted to ask if anyone had probs with their dogs and rawhide chews. Sam had just come back from a 2 day stay at the vets (he had gastroenteritis) he is now on the mend - after reading the link it started me thinking - Sam loves his Rawhide chews - and yet since having him four weeks ago he has had colitis and gastroenteritis - the page mentions Gastro irriations. Hmmmm

Jenny,
If a dog has or is recuperating from gastro problems the best thing to do is give them foods which are extremely easy to digest. Chicken and rice, for example. No treats or extras of any kind. If he still has problems after you put him back on regular dog food (if that's what you want to feed) I would then try different foods and see if they help. If you are in the U.K., Naturediet Light or even regular Naturediet seems to do the trick for many dogs.
I've given dogs rawhide for many years and never had a problem, even for dogs with sensitive stomachs. I never use the cheap kind, coloured kind, or kind that is mashed into little bits and then pressed back into various shapes.
However, you have to judge by your own dog and how he reacts. If your dog will accept the plastic bones, like Nylabones (mine will not), then I think that overall they are the best in terms of giving a dog something good to chew.
