Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Wont clean himself!!
- By CAZZA [us] Date 23.01.04 09:19 UTC
Hi!!

I feel embarrassed that I am posting about this subject! LOL
I have a 2 yr old Stafford, I have kept him from my bitches litter. She has always cleaned his bits!
He just wont clean himself. When she had an operation recently they had to be kept apart and he stunk!! He then got an infection!!
I have now just received a 10month old male pup back from another litter, they get on fine, but he expects this pup to clean him too!! he posistions himself in just the right place!! err!!
Any ideas!!??

Apart from putting something tasty on the offending area, no. This is more than a problem of smell it is important to the health of the equipments that it should be, er, removed from it's packaging at regular intervals and cleaned. Is perhaps the dog a little over weight?

Hi Jackie

No he isnt over weight he is an athletic Stafford and is very lean, so no that isnt his excuse. I am totally confused as to what/why he wont do it, recently he has just started cleaning his testicles, but that is as far as he goes!

I do tell my bitch not to clean him which she does stop, but he then looks sad!!
Like I say he got an infection before as theywere kept seperate and it wasnt cleaned! So I cant always stop her.   I wonder what will happen if/when she passes away? Along way off yet though!!

just like a man !  :) (have you changed your sox 2day?) ha ha
my 2 do this also, they do clean themselves - but they help each other out to.

I had a Springer Spaniel that never cleaned his bits either.  The little minger always had a lipstick to avoid :(.  I used to sponge it down for him and keep the hair trimmed from round it but it always used to be sticky at the least.
Being a working dog as well I had to be careful at work as he'd try to climb on laps for a cuddle - wiping it and leaving a trail on clothes - yuk :(
So, basically not all dogs clean their bits.  I'd let your bitch do it :)

Cazza, why don't you try putting a bit of honey on his bits, if you do this a few times maybe it will encourage him to clean himself & then perhaps he'll continue to do so & you can stop the honey.
You'll have to make sure your bitch is out of the way.  :)
We use this method to encourage maiden moms to clean their pups bums if they're a bit unsure, a dab of honey on each bum & mom soon gets the idea. :)

Thanks guys!!
I dont think he is as unusual now!! LOL

I will try the honey, anything is worth a try!
My bitch is due to have pups in 4 weeks, so I hope to have all sorted by then, as she have too many to clean, and the germs are a worry!!
