My mini schnauzer is now over 1 year and I seem to have gone terribly wrong somewhere with the inner ear hair removal.  It's got to the stage where he won't let me put my fingers in his ears and I have to take him by surprise to remove any of it.  Trying to do it on the grooming table is a disaster and he gets a bit nasty -he is such a placid little thing. He then will try and throw his arms around my neck begging me to not do it.   I try to do a very small amount every few days, one ear at a time but it is such a performance.  I am probably clutching at straws here but does anyone have any tips on how I can improve the situation please. 

Have you tried putting powder in the ear first......Thornit is very good.  It really helps with the removal of excess hair in the ear canal.  You can pull it out much easier as it dries the hair.......also kills mites and smells so nice.

No I haven't tried that, does the powder have to be removed afterwards or do you leave the residue in the ear? 

Leave the powder in the ear.  It will eliminate anything nasty that might be lurking in there.

Poppy (1 year old mini schnauzer) is clipped every 7/8 weeks and they trim off the hair inside her ears.  I never pluck them inbetween.  I am heading for trouble or is this ok?

Any advice?

Karen, I have read lots on this and the advice is to keep the ear channel relatively free of hair because there is a danger is really hairy ears that the hair can grown inside and then you have problems.  I don't know if this means no hair or just pluck a little.  I also clipper the inside of the ear but this doesn't get any where near the hair coming through the centre channel of the ear. 

You need to remove most if not all the hair in the ear canal.  This cannot be done by just clipping as it only cuts the hair.  The powder really does work well.  If it is done properly the dog shouldnt even object.  Just pull a small amout at a time with your finger and thumb.  Good Luck.

I will get some of the powder and start to give it a go.  She is going to the groomers next week and might see if she can give me a demo!
