Topic Dog Boards / Health / GSD with arched back?
- By jinny [gb] Date 22.01.04 12:09 UTC
Hi
I have a GSD who will be 1 next week and he has a arch at the top of his back and whilst out walking today a lady told me this is a bad sign in the breed and that he will have back problems is this true?
Any advice would be very welcome

Jinny,

An arched back in GSDs is called a roach back.  It is not an indication that the dog will have back or health problems.  The ideal back shape for a GSD is level, or as near to it as possible, but most dogs (even show dogs) do not come up to the ideal in every aspect.

If the silly woman you met has given you a reason to worry, next time you take your dog to the vet ask him or her - I am sure they will tell you there is nothing to worry about.
