Things to look for
Avoid:
Anyone who does not ask you any questions - (provided they have pups at the time - if no pups or they are busy they may not go through their questions with you)
Someone without an affix if they have had more than one litter (this one will cause contraversey but some of our biggest puppy farmers in Dobes don't have affixes.
Anyone who had more than one affix in their household spread amongst different family members (one breed)
Breeders who don't health test
Breeders who health test and ignore their results
Breeders who can't describle a Dobermann to you using the breed standard - ie you have a copy of the breed standard and ask them to describe a Dobe.
Breeders who say "oh, I'm not a breeder" - anyone who has puppies from their bitch is a breeder
It is preferable that the parents have been shown at some point in their lives and deemed to be close to the breed standard
Someone who will take your money, give you a pup and say goodbye - don't want to see you again.
Ask to see a copy of the puppy sale contract - do you think it is fair
What back up will you get from your breeder thoughout the dog's life?
When you visit what are the premises like - will any adults come into the room while you are there or do they hide away - most Dobes often tend to be stand-offish with strangers and will come to you when they are ready
Puppies should love nearly everyone - although some are wary of people who loom over them - difficult to explain what I mean but some people seem to project them selves as bigger than they are and I find that most dogs are way of people like this.
If there is lots of dog mess (pup and/or adult) lying around and the puppy area is dirty
If the pups don't have anything to play with or stimulate them in their pen
Look for:
Someone who asks you questions and is interested in why you want a dog and how you intend to treat it - you may be asked some quite personal questions but remember that someone is considering selling you one of their "babies"
A breeder is who is happy to give you parent's health test results (and possibly grandparents as well)
Are there any pictures or books about Dobe's in evidence - indicating that they have an interest in the breed
Someone who does not have lots of puppies and/or puppies of different breeds around. Most people who are passionate about Dobermanns tend to only have one or two breeds - off-hand I can only think of one exception this this and this paricular lady has three breeds.
(I've run out of time to do any more at the moment but will try and continue later if you want me to (you will need to register to ask again)
