Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Help need some info on boxer puppy

Hello
Can anyone give me some advice on some questions to ask a breeder over the phone about a puppy they have for sale.  The reason for it being over the phone is they live about 2 3 hours drive away.  I don't want to be rude but I don't want to get all the way there and the puppy isn't what we are looking for. I am sure he will be, but, just if he is healthy or not.  He is 11 weeks old and red and white which is what we are looking for.
thanks for any info anyone might have.

OK some of the really important questions to ask are
Are both parents heart-tested and graded clear? Ask for the pedigree names of the dam and sire to check.
By this both parents to be considered clear they must score 0 (zero) or 1.
You can check up on this by going to the heart-list on www.boxerunderground.com/uk
here the KC registered names of all the dogs and bitches tested clear are listed in alpha order
under their respective sex. The owner/breeder of pup should be able to produce at least the
dams (mothers) heart testing certificate and the newer ones are A4 and properly printed, the owners
copy should be white with black print. The vet that has done the testing stamps the copy with their
surgery stamp and signs the certificate.
You can read all about aortic stenosis on Boxerunderground.com too. All dogs that appear on the list
have been tested by a vet that specialises in cardiology.
Ask if the pup is docked or not (some prefer docked Boxers others would prefer tails).
Is the pup (UK) KC-reg?
Has he had his 1st innoculation? with relevant vet certificate to proove so. at 11 weeks old I would hope so.
Has he been wormed and how many times & what with (do they have a worming record sheet?)
What are his markings? You've described him as red and white, but what are his markings??
Does he have 4 white socks (or stockings higher white on his legs), a white collar or half collar (white on the neck), white blaze (typically an even blaze
marking goes over the dogs muzzle and up between the 'stop' or the eyes) or just a splosh of white on his nose
or uneven blaze which only goes over one side of the face. Or is he plain (sooty or black) faced which means no white markings at all on his face/head.
He could be described as a plain or solid which means he could have the absolute minimum of white markings, just a smidgen on his toes
and a little on the chest. Or is he over-marked which means white that comes up over the sides of his back legs or mismarked
half a white face etc. Any Boxer which has more than a 1/3 white markings is considered over marked.
If you want to eventually show him you do not want a dog with half a white face etc etc.
Is he entire, has he got 2 balls!! As some dogs can be monorchid or cryptorchid which means they only have 1 ball or no balls
descended. If he only has one or none he will need to be castrated eventually. (It's funny that people don't think to ask or check to see that their pup has all its bits!, even worse when the breeder doesn't bother!!)
Can you see him with his mum and other members of the family?
Why have they still got him at 11 weeks of age?
Have they had any other health-tests done with the parents? for eg hip score, eyes, temperaments etc etc.
What after sales advice/back-up does the breeder provide, will he come with diet sheet/info pack,
what food is he fed? what routine is he used to? is he toilet trained to paper? Has he been reared inside a home environment,
is he used to other dogs/cats/people/children normal house noises?

The list can be endless, but the breeder should feel happy answering as best they can any questions that you may ask.
Good Luck!!

Hi - you need to know that BOTH parents were heart tested clear.  You also should ask if both parents are KC registered, and that the litter was registered - she should have the paperwork, of which one piece you would take away with you to transfer the pup in your name. Also, make sure the mum is there to see when you go - sounds obvious, but I have seen a litter where there was no mum as 'there wasn't room' !!

Most pups go off to their new homes at around 8 weeks... If it were little old cynical me, I'd probably ask if there was any reason for them going later rather than earlier, but then I'm not an expert and it probably isn't a problem. But the most important thing is that the parents were heart tested - its crucial.

I'm sure someone else will be along to add to this list, but thats off the top of my head :)

Hope it helps a little, and good luck!

Edited to say: I knew someone would have a better and more concise answer than me :) Cheers!
