Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How should I go about it?

Hi,
We have always left Cassie's (8mth Norfolk x) food out all day so she can eat when she wants. She is n James Wellbeloved dried so theres no real problem. However she doesn't seem to enjoy it very much so I tried her with little naturediet which she loved. My question is how should I go abut just putting her food down 2-3 times a day rather than having it out all day. I'm worried she wont eat when I put it down because she thinks it will be left for her to eat at her leisure. I would be grateful to hear people's opinions on this.

Thanks Deb

Putting it down and removing it 15 mins later will soon focus her attention:D.  Dogs, even puppies, will not starve even if they do not eat for 2 or 3 days :D.  If she does not eat it, remove and give absolutely nothing until next meal time and repeat until she figures it out :D

Thanks, thought so, u seem to have picked up on me worrying about her starving:) Mind u she wouldn't have much chance of that, she only needs to follow my 3 year old around and pick up what he drops!
Do u think 2 meals a day is enough for a small dog or should she have 3 smaller meals, I've been advised different things by different people.

Thanks deb

Hi Deb,

Twice a day is enough for a small adult dog.  I feed my Cairn about 1/5 of a pack twice a day, plus she gets table food and some dog biscuits.  With fewer of the extras, I would feed her 1/4 pack twice a day.

I refrigerate the open pack and warm it for her meals
in the microwave.

Thanks Stacey,
I'm going to start tomorrow. Will let you know how we get on but I'm sure she will be fine.
