Topic Other Boards / Foo / GP referal scheme for excercise

Hi everyone! I thought this may be usefull for some of you. I recently learned about the above scheme. My doctor didnt know about it, but if you have a medical condition & could benefit from a tailor made excercise routine, & monitoring at a local gym. There are gyms all over the country apparently which belong to the scheme & your going there is subsidised, cos its for medical reasons. I thought it might be usefull for some cos I didnt know where to start getting fit as I cant walk far & thought a gym was no good for me. I am going for my assesment  at the gym soon & then its 12 weeks of excercise sessions to follow. I am looking forward to it as I will learn what I can do for myself, & hopefully, will achieve a bit more fitness & knowledge, as my doctor didnt know about it, I got info from NHS Direct. Might be useful to some,as I say, it doesn't seem to be common knowledge. Regards, Chez.

Hi Chez

When talking to my GP  I said that I was on a diet and he told me about this....apparently after 12 weeks if you feel you need more they can increase the length.

This pleases me! Im sure I need more than 12 weeks worth, with what Ive been targeted to achieve. Im worn out thinking about it really! Chez.

That is interesting does this include Pilates do you know as have been told by my Neuro Consultant I need to it but want a proper qualified instructor to assess me and do a proper program . If I can get a referal then that would be good as it is so expensive !!

I dont know about that. Last year, I paid £50pm to belong to a gym, I didnt last long cos I was involved in a car accident & had to quit. But there were all sorts of classes there as well as pilates, & these were included in the monthly fee. It was there that a chap told me about the scheme he was on. I forgot about it, being as I didnt go for a while, but recently, due to events in my life, I remembered this. I asked my doctor about it, but she hadnt heard of it, but advised that I rang NHS Direct. They replied that they were surprised that my GP hadnt heard of it, but got me some info. Unfortunately, the gym I used to go to, say they havent heard of this scheme either! So, I will be going to a smaller gym, without so many facilities. I will miss the classes & swimming, however, I will benefit from having an instructor with me throughout my excercise, & truly being qualified in medical conditions  & being aware of what I can realistically do. Before, the instructor was qualified in fitness only & I had big losses personally, because I felt a failure & unable. I am looking forward to it enormously. I suppose it may depend on whats available in your area, it may be in your interst to enquire. Good Luck, Chez.
